Not all capacities available at initial launch. ² Typical I/O performance numbers as measured using CrystalDiskMark with a queue depth of 64 and write cache enabled. Fresh out-of-box (FOB) state is assumed. For performance measurement purposes, the SSD may be restored to FOB state using the secure erase command. System variations will affect measured results. |

I disconnected an extra (old, mechanical) drive I had inside and replaced it with the new SSD, using the same cables. The cloning instructions for Acronis True Image are easy to follow and offer various "tools" in addition.
My whole transfer took around 20 minutes, with the satisfying "Disk was successfully cloned" message appearing at the end and final advice steps on using the new drive.
All in all, a straightforward and worthwhile procedure. Recommended !

You will require specialist screwdrivers to fit this to a MacBook Pro, both for removing the base cover, and separately for removing the hard drive. They are available on Amazon for <£10 (although the latter I ended up getting from a local "pound store"!)
I have never changed a hard-drive before, but I found this *was quicker and easier* than they said or than I expected. If anything, that was the easy bit.
Getting the OS onto the new drive working was much harder/longer process, but once done reloading all the data from TimeMachine was then quite simple.
At the same time I swapped the 2 x 2gb of RAM for 2 x 4gb of RAM (because one of the RAM had failed, causing a black screen and three beeps on a repeating cycle).
The combination of the new SSD and the slight boost in RAM means her laptop fires up from "complete shut-down to logged in on the desktop screen" in 34 seconds (in Mac 10.13 High Sierra). It really is very fast, and has given her laptop quite a bit of extra life. I've used Crucial for RAM upgrades in the past and they've been great, which is why I trusted them for the SSD. Total cost of SSD, RAM and screwdrivers <£200 which is really good value for a couple of years worth of use of a MacBook Pro.
I swapped out a HDD from a desktop in less than an hour over a USB 3.0 connection. You'll need a suitable caddy/adapter if cloning an old drive.
Things I would recommend.
1. Install the free softwares from crucial website first. (Crucial Executive and Acronis )
2.. Upgrade the firmware using CE before you clone the disk to minimise the risk to you data
3. Using Acronis - Go for manual option and use proportional fit to clone. This suits better if your disks are different sizes. I was copying 250 gb HDD to this 500 GB SSD. Automatic mode was ready to make a 250 GB of restore partition and just use 250 like for like. Not end of the world require some additional effort to reclaim the space. Going manual avoided that. But if you want total piece of mind go Automatic on same size disk where posaible as this would have been most tested feature and easiest to follow.
The problems arise upon receipt though - the Crucial cloning software did not load, so was useless. This meant I had to use separate software from Amazon which also didn’t load (sold as compatible with Windows 10 but wasn’t). I ended up getting an Easeus.com Licence for £30 online which worked perfectly.
I had the Crucial SSD for approximately two months - 2 - before it completely failed. I don’t expect to spend circa £80 for anything and find it fail in 8 weeks. Pathetic.
Crucial tech support was poor - internet support is difficult at the best of times but to just direct me to reams of website pages for ‘support’ is not good enough really.
Amazon UK were very good though, quickly informing me to send the SSD back to them and sending a new one which was received approximately three weeks after the initial failure. The only thing about this was that I had personal information on the original drive that I couldn’t get to due to the failure of the unit - this still leaves me worried but I’ve changed passwords just in case someone is able to crack it!!
The new one is fitted and I’ll update this review as I go on with it. It is fast and offers - like all SSD’s - clean access to several open software apps without much lag even with a Toshiba laptop with only 4GB RAM like mine. I just hope it keeps going a bit longer than two months...
**it is now July 2019 and it has failed again. So that’s end of February 2019 to July 21st 2019. 5 months use - and not daily use. Absolutely shocking and pathetic. Crucial - I will not be buying from you again.
