Not all capacities available at initial launch. ² Typical I/O performance numbers as measured using CrystalDiskMark with a queue depth of 64 and write cache enabled. Fresh out-of-box (FOB) state is assumed. For performance measurement purposes, the SSD may be restored to FOB state using the secure erase command. System variations will affect measured results. |

Cloning my old HDD to the new SSD was easy with the free Crucial software from their website. Faultless transfer ( I used a Sabrent USB 3.0 to SSD / 2.5-Inch SATA I/II/III Hard Drive Adapter EC-SSHD)and then swapped out the HDD for the new SSD in my laptop.
Windows 10 then ran through a basic setup, as if a new install, and I was up and running in a few minutes. As I have a digital windows ID, it automatically registered. If you have an older version of windows, or no Microsoft account set up, you will need your Windows licence code.
The Bad:
After a few minutes I got a blue screen of death. The computer would not restart. After half an hour I finally got windows to boot again. I think the drive was overheating, causing it to crash. I had put my original HDD back, and noticed the SSD was really hot to the touch.
My first thought was that a problem in the cloning process was causing errors. I wiped the SSD and fitted it again, then did a fresh clean windows install. This went really fast but the system only ran for a few minutes before crashing again. I removed the SSD, and refitted my original HDD, which ran fine.
I contacted Amazon help line (Fantastic service) and they arranged a return and refund right away.
One further point. If you ever have to return a drive for any reason, make sure you wipe the drive first. As it was cloned, it contained all my documents and settings, a format will not erase your personal data that may be there. It needs to be overwritten. Easus partition master is free for home use and will do this for you. Also, if you fit a new drive, use 'Open Hardware Monitor' (Free, search for it) to check your drive is not overheating.
Update: Having now been in use for nearly three months, the SSD is still performing well and I am very happy with it. I did have a problem with a persistent BSOD which occurred within a few minutes of booting; this was caused by mticache.sys which is part of the Crucial Storage Executive software. The cure was to uninstall CSE, which does not affect the operation of the SSD.
Further update: July 2020: still running well. A very good investment.
I've also installed a 1TB version in a gaming rig as a system drive. The machine launches to Windows 10 in practically the same time as my editing system which has 3x WD Black WDS512G1X0C NVMe PCI-e SSD's as a system drives, allegedly upto 5x faster read speeds than Crucial SSD - without enabling Raid. Yes, NVMe drives are quicker at sending files to each other but I'd not bother with them at their current price over a traditional SSD, the diminishing return is colossal. There's next to no difference when editing between SSD and NVMe using a system comprising of 1950x (16c/32t) CPU, 64GB DDR4, GTX 1080 TI.
I hope this helps.
