Product Description

Product Description

A dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The gold pins on the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.

240-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR2 SDRAM memory for desktop computers. DDR2 is a leading-edge generation of memory with an improved architecture that allows it to transmit data very fast.

Each 240-pin DIMM provides a 64-bit data path (72-bit for ECC or registered or Fully Buffered modules). (The Ballistix™ and Ballistix Tracer™ high-performance memory do not come in 72-bit or registered modules.)

Standard DDR2 240-pin DIMMs are available in DDR2 PC2-3200 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-4200 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-5300 SDRAM, and PC2-6400 SDRAM.

To use DDR2 memory, your system motherboard must have 240-pin DIMM slots and a DDR2-enabled chipset. A DDR2 SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM DIMM socket or a DDR DIMM socket.

The number of black components on a 240-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. 240-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.18 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 240-pin DDR2 DIMMs, 184-pin DDR DIMMs, and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 240-pin DIMMs and 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins. The notch in a 240-pin DDR2 DIMM is closer toward the center of the module.

I wanted to upgrade the memory on an old Dell PC from 2 to 4Gb. I chose Crucial because experience has taught me that the Crucial product is 100% compatible with my particular model. I put the two modules in and the upgrade worked perfectly.

My object in performing this uprade was to reduce the number of BSODs that I was having with Windows 7. This has been achieved.

A point to remember. If you are using a 32bit version of Windows then it will be unable to see the full 4Gb of RAM. This is because the address space that a 32bit Winsows system can address tops out just over 3Gb. If you are not in a position to upgrade to a 64bit version of Windows you might want to purchase the alternative 1Gb upgrade that Crcuial supply.

If you are running a 32 bit system and have an original Windows install disc then you can usually upgrade to a 64bit version of Windows. That will allow your sytem to address all the extra memory BUT be aware that this involves major work on your C: drive. If you do this you will need to act to protect your data and be prepared to reinstall applications.

Item arrived within 3 days of ordering using Super Saver (I never pay for shipping unless I have too!). Used to upgrade an older PC from 2 - 4GB now that its running the 64bit version of Windows 8. Installing memory is probably the easiest upgrade task you can do in a PC and all seems good at the moment so no complaints. Good price too, £5 cheaper than than buying direct from Crucial at the time I ordered.

PC wouldn't work with it in but would with the old RAM in. Tried all the slots and the only common factor was this RAM which was returned as faulty. Surprising, really, as Crucial have an excellent reputation for RAM. I take it as a blip and would still buy from Crucial again.
