Crucial BX100 SSD
Outlast and Outperform your Hard Drive
Boot up almost instantly. Load programs in seconds and accelerate demanding applications with ease. It all starts with ditching your hard drive.
The storage revolution that started in 2008 with Crucial's first SSD continues with the Crucial BX100. Engineered to outperform a hard drive and deliver a better performance, the Crucial BX100 uses Micron memory technology and moves your computer beyond the outdated storage limitations of spinning discs. By transmitting data in a digital manner rather than having to seek it out on a spinning platter, the Crucial BX100 makes nearly everything on your computer faster and more efficient.

A Faster SystemGet more done in less time – or just have more fun. The Crucial BX100 SSD is faster than a typical hard drive, delivering true 535 MB/s sequential reads on both compressible and incompressible data. By treating all data the same, the Crucial BX100 allows you to do everything quickly, regardless of whether you're saving an image, accessing a ZIP file or loading a video. |
A Safer SystemProtect your data by storing it on the Crucial BX100. In the computer industry, storage drive reliability is measured in mean times between failures (MTBF). Most hard drives have MTBF ratings of 0.6 million hours, whereas The Crucial BX100 has a reliability rating of 1.5 million hours. In practical terms, the more reliable your drive is, the less likely it is to crash. |
More Energy EfficientRun your system longer and harder – using less power. Since SSDs access data digitally rather mechanically, they consume significantly less power. Benefitting from Crucial’s energy efficiency technology, the Crucial BX100 features lower power consumption, is designed to save energy and promotes longer battery life. |
Micron quality – Reliability
As a brand of Micron, Crucial benefits from vertical integration with a large flash storage manufacturer. This means the Crucial BX100 is backed by the same quality that has produced some of the best memory and storage technologies. With over thousand hours of pre-release validation testing and hundreds of SSD qualification tests, the Crucial BX100 has been thoroughly tried, tested and proven. You'll notice the difference.

Now it is less than a minute, up and working, on the internet, opening programs, absolute heaven.
Installing was a doddle on my desktop having ample SATA and power leads available I just plugged it in and taped it to the side of the drive bay, nothing fancy. Next I downloaded a free cloning program, cloned my C: to the SSD, swapped the drive letters over in Disk Management, wiped the old hard drive to use as a data only drive and 'boom' done. Simples.
One thing to consider is the size of the drive; I bought a 500Gb drive - a 128Gb would have been quite sufficient because it basically only holds the operating system. It is not advisable to keep adding and deleting files on a SSD it shortens their life - so I am informed.
The issue is that although those Macs use SATA II that can run at 3Gbps, the buggy controller means that many SSDs will only run at 1.5Gbps, and this drive is one of them.
I have returned this drive and replaced it with the Crucial M500, which is more expensive (and probably getting rarer now), but it uses a Marvell onboard controller that is fully compatible with the controller in the Mac and so it runs at 3Gbps.
After upgrading to Windows 10 the PC slowed considerably - start ups were taking many minutes. After much investigatory work the only thing anyone could find that wasn't up to scratch was the hard drive.
So with advice from cleverer people than me I purchased this SSD to install as a boot drive and to contain all programs etc. Installing was a breeze and then did a fresh install of Windows 10. Obviously had a lot of reorganisng to do but it has been well worth it. The PC is working like a new machine. Boot up is quick, switching from one account to the other is quick, programs load immediately and I am now just using the 3tb drive as a storage device - but will be replacing that soon.
So, very happy with my purchase. I am not a techie so cant give you any advice on spec and so on but I would say that SSD is a great improvement and this one seemed good value for money.
I'm not expert enough to give accurate comparisons as to performance, but I can say that it has made an astonishingly positive difference to the speed at which my computer loads programmes and documents - which is what I wanted. This being my only SSHD system, I cannot easily compare it to other SSHDs, but on the improvement made, the drive comes highly rated on the simple basis that it works (thus far) and works well - to the extent that an old MacBook now effectively outperforms a rather more powerful (and previously much faster) iMac with a magnetic hard-drive in general use.
The bundled licence key for cloning software does not seem to be compatible with OS X, but you can use Disk Utility for that job, and there are plenty of tutorials online for the process.
