Despite using the Crucial website compatibility checker this memory (may have) fried my motherboard and further investigation through Dell compatible products suggests that 1866 is too fast so when I purchased a custom HP Elitebook 820 G2 to use this in (along with my shiny new SanDisk SSD) I explained to the seller my concern and he directed me to the HP website that says this isn't compatible, despite the Crucial website compatibility checker saying it is AGAIN, this time for the new HP laptop.
I am not going to risk putting this in my HP laptop when it arrives tomorrow, instead I have paid the laptop retailer extra to supply 2 8GB sticks that will be tested before it ships out this afternoon. He also told me he had the same problem with supposedly compatible memory from Crucial a couple of years ago and he doesn't use them now.
It's rather worrying that a company as massive as Crucial can claim to supply compatible components that may destroy your computer (motherboard) giving you no recourse other than a refund of the offending purchase and no compensation for additional time, stress and money spent on other hardware as a result of this failure.
