Review

"Very Impressive." -Will Shortz, New York Times crossword editor "On Crosswords by T Campbell honors and explores the totality of crossword puzzles-in our culture and in our hearts and minds. Nobody has put together a Gestaltian analysis like this before. I learned quite a bit from the enjoyable read." -Roy Leban, crossword creator, inventor, founder of Puzzazz "I very much enjoyed reading this-an impressive and thorough overview of the state of the art, and meticulously documented. It'll be a great resource to refer to!" -Elizabeth Gorski, The New York Times's most-published creator of Sunday crosswords

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff! 20 Sept. 2013
By bongobird - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
From pre-history of crosswords to snarky gossip, T Campbell has written a highly entertaining account of how crossword puzzles came to be in the first place and how they came to be what they are today. The research is meticulous. Campbell's exploration of past and present crossword varieties, along with personal reflections on what constitutes excellence (and flaws) is amply illustrated by well-chosen examples.

If you enjoy crosswords and related puzzles you'll enjoy this.

I've read many books on crosswords, but this one goes beyond the merely historical to dig deeper, reveal aspects to the puzzles that you may not have previously contemplated. If you love crosswords, I can't imagine not loving this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Here's the beef. 21 Feb. 2014

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Too much cockyness and irrelevant lingo. No clues given to help understand answers. Did not add to my solving skills.
