OMG!!! HOW COULD IT END LIKE THAT?????????
*cough* This is the second book I've read with settings in the area of the Middle East (first one was Kite Runner) and this was really interesting! It's two people with their own rich problems, expectations and set responsibilities to uphold the family honor. Doing what you're told vs doing what's best for yourself. Their love was intriguing for me, especially when they didn't even really talk until well after a few chapters. The story built them up for me, showing me their worlds while teasing me with their glances of happening to be in the same place (I know it was you Fate) and- geez, just wow!
I fell in love with this because I have a soft spot for when it comes to volunteering, and El goes to help the Syrian refugees, a serious problem that I've all but heard about on the news this past year. It gave me a bit of guilty pleasure to see her do something for the kids who suffer through war and death. I fell harder and faster with every class she had with the little ones. Add that to her attraction to Raj? *whistles*
Their meeting was a bit fast for me, but I could understand why Raj would feel the way he did, especially after all the coincidences they'd had before finally meeting in Jordan. I love fated love. *sighs* Their relationship was fun and exciting with the secrecy and intensity. It was funny to see how much some of El's cursing aggravated him haha. I also loved her host family! Won't say much about it for spoilers sake, but I LOVED the sense of their culture I got from this, and the clear sense that they're good people. Loved the emphasis on there being good people no matter the race/belief/religion/status, btw.
The story was great and flowed well, the pace was GREAT in pulling me in, wanting more, needing more. MORE MORE MORE! *breathes in* THAT ENDING!!!! Ugh tore my already crying heart to bits, and grr I really hate a particular character. Several, really, but this one especially. Grr!! This thing's just got me so messed up in the best of ways that very few authors accomplish. This thing was very elegant and... idk, humble? It's a sense I got while reading it, feeling more.... reserved, maybe? A rather reserved sense but more meek than 'out there', if I'm making any sense at all. Anyways I liked it, and I liked it even more when El would burst out with her sailor's mouth. lol.
It's a hard recommend for me! This story was so amazing and epic. Her journey to Jordan, learning a different culture, helping those in need, and falling for a man who has more in common with her than either realizes. I really loved that their love was the main thing, and how other things were made just as important as well. Really gave it all depth. If I could give this another star, I would.
The pull of these characters is completely captivating. Their voices screaming to be heard. The twists adding spice, laughter, & grief. An exciting blend of drama, action, romance, traitors vs. loyalty, responsibility vs. desire, royalty vs. commoners, star crossed lovers, & so much more! What would you do when the expectations set upon you are so far from your hearts desire(s)?
Then there's that ending ... dangling us over a cliff then plummeting to its depths at rocket speed. Ughhh!!! I need to see how Raj & El's story will end NOW!
*This story is for mature audiences due to sexual situations & language*
Oh my God!!! This book is amazing!! So full detail!! It sucks you in and you find yourself reading it on and on....
You'll want to lock the world out, switch all phones and spend a few hours in the world of Rajaa and Ella in the Middle East. The flow is so fluent, you don't notice how many pages you have to get through to reach the end.
I can't wait for part two...

I think Venessa did a fabulous job in building the characters, and allowing us to come to know them individually before their romance lit up like the Fourth of July! I loved getting to know Ella, and her background. I was fascinated to see the privilege she came from, and how she was able to build a life on her own terms, while not allowing herself to fall upon her privileged upbringing.
I loved coming to know Raj as the story evolved, and see how much he cared for his native Jordan, his family, the people in his country as well as the refugees. I loved that he is so determined to help them find a better life.
I think the love scenes had enough spark to be juicy, interesting and fun, without going over the edge and changing the novel into a more erotic novel.
I enjoyed reading the background of Jordan, the descriptions of all of places within the story. I could close my eyes and see the pictures based on the words. I love reading books where the author is skilled enough to balance the boring, but necessary, description with art of using visual language, and ending up with a work that is not boring, but transports the reader the world the author is describing. It was effortless for me to see what the characters were seeing.
I can't wait to see the finale, and see where Ella and Raj's romance takes us. Will they end up as Romeo and Juliet, or will they have their happily ever after? I, for one, cannot wait to find out.
for, and they get their HEA!!!
