ENIGMA The Cross Of Changes (1994 Taiwanese 9-track CD the 2nd album by the musical project featuring the singles Return To Innocence Age Of Loneliness The Eyes Of Truth and Out From The Deep picture sleeve plus obi-strip)

Amazon.co.uk

Haunting, evocative, mysterious, and magnificent, Enigma's Cross of Changes offers nine musical explorations of sound and sensation that dazzle and amaze. The songs unfold in rolling waves, each more complex and richly layered than the last, yet each fully capable of standing alone as a musically satisfying experience. The standout track on this disc is "Return to Innocence", which combines Native American chanting, Celtic harmonies, and a deceptively simple lyric to devastating effect. At once esoteric and elemental, Cross of Changes is a fine example of the best the genre has to offer. --L.A. Smith

I originally bought this album when I was a first year university student. I remember playing it over and over with my new found friends thinking I was soooo cool! Well, it's some 10 years later now, and I no longer worry about looking cool, however, I do worry about ever losing my copy of this CD, because even 10 years later it sounds as fresh and inventive as it did all that time ago. Whenever I feel down in the dumps this is the best CD in the world to put on and just forget about everything else! truly a masterpiece that will be around for many more years to come I hope.

This is an album that, from the sample clips, you may not think is for you. However if you listen to the album proper, you realise that this is quite wrong. Cross of changes is an outstanding, brilliant piece of work that encompases a style of music rarely heared and thus warmly welcome. It is a change from anything really, although individual songs borrow styles from others, especially Return to innocence, which borrows from the Sacred Spirit style of Native American chants with relaxed, spiritual music and lyrics. This album is a must for anyone, it is perfect for any mood, it will uplift you, relax, calm you whatever. The highlights are 'i love you, i'll kill you' and the outstanding and beautiful 'return to innocence', which featured in an advert for peugeot and will stay with you forever; you'll never forget or tire of that song. This is a perfect album and should feature in anyones album collection

I personally am sick of the trashy, contrived formulaeic music in today's charts. That's why I love this CD, it's SO different. This I think will still be my favourite of the lot, even if/when I complete the set.
The intro (Second Chapter), which is nothing short of absolutely mind-blowing, will take your breath away, leading you into a sublime, continuous journey through your very soul, with musical style you quite simply have not heard ANYWHERE before. It aint just a relaxation CD (an insult, in my view) - it's MUCH more than that, and at the same time indescribable. It's truly awesome and will make the hairs stand on end, trust me. Just put the volume up full, and let your spirit rise. Simply breath-taking. Michael Cretu and gang don't get nearly as much credit or publicity as they deserve.
Buy it, especially if you want to defy convention.

I was always a fan of Enigma'smusic and I rediscovered theis sound recently through an associate.I purchased several Enigma CD's from Amazon and they are all excellent.Cross of Changes has me enthralled. It is melodic and enhanced throughout by intriguing words which are poetry. There are echoes of the soundtrack of Chariots of Fire in some parts.I would recommend it without hesittation to anyone who has soul in need of nourishment.

Going through all my Enigma CDs at the moment and it's turning our to be an absolute treat.

This follow up to the excellent MCMXC a.d. eschewed - for the most part - what could been a lazy cliche of returning Greogrian chants mixed with Ibiza-lite club beats ( though they give us pan pipes chants and choral in the epic opener "The Eyes of Truth," with a much darker mood than heard in their debut ) given their previous success.

Instead they broaden their sound into darker, more trip-hoppy territory, lacing their sampled chants, eastern motifs, and Native American songs with driving, twisting, and interesting, layered rhythms. Laid back and lusty vocals hint at the darkness, and there is sometimes a swampy oppressiveness about tunes like the Sliver sound-tracking "Age of Lonliness ( Carly's Song )" that still impress. It's probably going a bit far to compare what is basically Spiritual House with dubcentric bands like Massive Attack, but listening to this now that's oddly the vibe I'm hearing, from the slow and dubbed up tempos to the sneering, throbbing guitars and sudden lurches into dark sexuality.

Also there's a song called "The Dream of the Dolphin." It's lovely and weird and weirdly lovely and it's totally lame. I love it.

So anyway, that's "The Cross of Change." Odd, dark, weird, optimistic and pessimistic, silly and fantastic all at once.

This is the only CD which I have ever heard which combines relaxation and also borders on the verge of erotic.
Excellent background music for after a good date.

A good album and a worthy follow up to MCMXC.AD. Had to buy this copy as a replacement as over the years of many many house moves my original copy had moved without me. The pan pipes are still here but not in every track which is a good move forward. The album meanders along and it's 45 minutes length is over a little too soon for me and I have often found myself putting it on loop. It's great to listen to when lying in bed or on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
