This is fabulous, from the first track to last, faultless.
Highlight for me is probably Moan, listen to her guitar work in that - shivers down your spine time.

Also, if you buy this you get access to 9 additional tracks, out-takes that failed to make the album.

Don't hesitate, just buy

The music is top notch and what you'd expect fropm Kristin Hersh. Not sure about the book package ; the "essays" were rather sparse and pretty much like regular liner notes and as interesting as it is to download the album and the extra's from the web-site, I'd prefer for asthetic reasons (!) to still have the album included on a CD e.g. in a pocket within the book and have only the extra's as download only.

As usual with Kristin Hersh records, the music of "Crooked" takes "a few spins" to get into. When it hits you, though, you fall in love! The "Crooked" songs are immediately pleasing to the ear, but given time, the full impact of the words and music is felt.

But I'm getting ahead of myself in this case, as this particular album comes in the form of a hardback book. It does not contain a CD, but rather details of how to download the songs and the accompanying wealth of multimedia online.

And it is a very beautifully presented book, containing essays on all the songs. Both the essays and the songs themselves are moving and powerful and reward repeated listening and reading. Thoroughly recommended.

Crooked is another amazing offering from an artist that has never failed to surprise or disappoint. From the heartbreaking tones of "flooding" to the full on blast of "coals", Kristin has once again proved that after 20 odd years on the road she can still come up with something as fresh, original and inspiring as Crooked.

Crooked is an album more interesting than most; both in terms of the songs on it and how it was put together. Kristin released almost 30 tracks in the 2 years prior to it's release, all online and for free, and compiled the album from them. It will therefore sound familiar to those who were eagerly awaiting the monthly downloads, but several songs are noticeably different, most obviously the album opener, Mississippi Kite, and Bliss.

The album is presented here as a beautifully put together book, complete with lyrics and an essay by Kristin on each song. It contains a digital code to download the album, 2 EPs, an audio commentary and more.

The tone of the album is dark but not dreary, acoustic and breathy. It's hypnotic and requires several listens to really get your teeth into it. As on all her albums, the lyrics are poetic, unfathomable and fascinating. It's infinitely listenable and never seems to get tired. Kristin's last few albums have been among the best of her career and this is no exception. It doesn't sound like any album she has released before (as always) and it's remarkable she can still manage to sound so different and distinctive about 20 albums into career.

Simply put, Crooked is great. Get it!

A new album from Kristin is always a good day in our house, and today is no exception.

Kristin has a way of making you feel her music like no one else can. From the start of "Mississippi Kite" to the last notes of " Rubidoux" it never fails to draw you in & entrance you.

If you are a newcomer to Kristin with this album, then you have a wealth of gems yet to discover. The fireball punk of 50 foot wave, the Indie charm of Throwing Muses & a wealth of solo albums. None of them will fail to impress you.

This album comes in book form. Strange? Not really. You get a beautiful book with lyrics & essays, & the music comes as a download from her website. You can download it in a wide variety of formats to suit everyones taste. Kristin gives so many songs away for free through CashMusic.

She is an amazing artist who defies the industry model created by big record companies.

You should admire her & take her to your hearts!

Genius

This really is a very special item indeed and an interesting concept that actually works! When you get the book (which is a really nice to have item in itself), you can access a wealth of extras, not least the Crooked album itself. I have followed Kristin's carrer for some time now and can honestly say that this album is definately one of her best. The songs, the instruments, that voice....its all there and definately a return to form. Not only that but you can download another 2 EPs which will give you all told about 80 mins worth of music (inc the Crooked album). So basically for less than a tenner you're getting a fantastic full length album, 2 EPs, a beautiful hardback book to accompany the album and other extras on line as well. Bit of a no-brainer really. If you've admired the work of Ms Hersh at any stage in her career, then this is for you. And if you've never heard of her, its still for you.
