From the Inside Flap

--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I have read "Cronica de una muerte anunciada" and I consider one of South American Literature best books. Marquez style is almost perfect. I notice he writes with his heart not only his pen. He uses some foul language, but manages to keep the book within a polite language. The book is somewhat messy, maybe it needs more organization. Marquez tells the story in a way he can play with the different times and still develop his ideas. For example Marquez is investigating the police report about Santiago Nasar's death, then we read what happened the day before he was killed and we read about the day he was killed. The characters Marquez created to tell this story about death and South American values are perfect to develop the theme of the book. The theme is precisely the death of a framed young man by the hand of two avengers, which everybody knew about but didn't do much to prevent. The main value presented in the book is honor. In the book we read about Bayardo San Roman, a foreigner that married a girl in Marquez's home town, after a short courtship and a fancy wedding. Angela Vicario was forced to marry him by her mother which said "even love can be learned". This meant the wedding was convenient to the poor Vicario family, a large family. However men like their future wives to be virgins. Angela Vicario was not a virgin and she tried to hide it during the honey moon. Two hours after the honey moon started she was returned to her family as any other object by her husband. Her family, well they were angry and they asked for the name of her "author". She thought about Santiago Nasar that young ladiesman, rich and handsome guy, and said he was the man. Her family was outraged. Her brothers decided to kill him the next day.Read more ›

Nothing can change the destiny of this man, who is all alone in front of his death. Everyone knows he could be saved, but life and death do not change anyway. Time is low, blocked just like in all Marquez's masterpieces: there are cycles of life and death, no matter of whom, because this is man's destiny.

Oh, what can I say, that 100 pages long novel written in 30 years, is one of the best novels ever written by Marques. The author has a tremendous ability in shifting the time and to not confuse the reader at all. The "lack" of dialogue and the abundance of discription of even of the most "unimportant things" in appearance, invites the reader to a fascinating world of simplicity and wonder, a world that makes us more human and more aware of who we are.
