This volume offers a guide to Cromwellian and civil war sites throughout Britain and Ireland, furnishing a topographical history of the Civil War and Commonwealth from the Parliamentary perspective. Not only does it cover the scenes of military conflict - battlefields, castles, fortified houses, churches, defended and besieged towns and cities - but also other locations connected with the leading Parliamentary soldiers, politicians, clerics and artists of the period, with an emphasis on sites connected with Oliver Cromwell and his family. An itinerary of Oliver Cromwell's movements from 1640 to 1658 appears as an appendix to the gazetteer and there is also a detailed genealogy of the Cromwells from the 16th century to the early 19th centruy.

A great resource beautifully produced with many fine illustrations.. One could use it as a travel guide as one tours all the British Isles to see places of significance in the civil war, not only battles and sieges but where the significant participants lived and died, One sees how the whole of the four countries were affected in this time terrible upheaval. A great resource for the history of 1642 to 1660.

Peter Gaunt's 'Cromwellian Gazeteer' is an extremely useful listing of Civil War sites in the UK and Republic of Ireland, complete with map references and a quick summary of the significance of the site. Particularly valuable features include a Cromwell 'itinerary' and plans showing his movements during the wars. It also has quite a number of black and white photos of points of interest. There have been several volumes of this type on the market - but this is one of the best if not the best. Interestingly it also boasts a brief foreword by CV Wedgwood - one of the great names in Civil War history in the twentieth century. The work has now run to several editions - the one I have dates to 1987 and is a very well produced hard back, but remains very relevant and well used.
There are very few things wrong with this title - but one minor point worthy of note is that although called a 'Cromwellian' gazeteer it covers the wars as a whole. Do not therefore expect a book just about Oliver Cromwell. Recommended for students of the Civil Wars, and all travellers interested in history.
