This book has some lovely patterns but unfortunately out of the 22 designs only 6 are for beginners. All the instructions are in American terminology and the yarns used are American yarns so as long as you read through carefully you should be able to translate them all to the UK equivalent but it may take a little time. On the whole a good little book but not really the for beginner.

I came to this book after having been very disappointed in a contemporary crochet book but with Crocheted Bags I got what I was looking for: practical beautiful patterns and a wealth of additional information. Yes it is American but the instructions include rough guides (eg that the wool used is 4-ply, doubleknitting or Aran-weight) and explains the differences in terminology (I have tried to crochet American 'sc' as UK slip stitch in the past so I know how confusing it can be). The beginner bags are easy and stylish and look good (and no I did not use the yarn stated, but then I never do) but I have not yet tried the advanced patterns. Instructions are fairly terse (this is a small volume easily slipped into a bag or possibly even a pocket) but I am enjoying the challenge of figuring them out - the language and definitions remain constant from pattern to pattern unlike some of the more creative books I've seen where each pattern is written in a different, idiosyncratic way. So yes, I would recommend it - if you're looking for a book of bags to crochet!

This book has a few really nice crochet patterns, which are easy enough to follow and didn't prove to difficult to complete (I'd describe my level as intermediate). The patterns are rated according to difficulty. The book also gets bonus points for being small and robust enough to fit into a handbag.
On the other hand it also contains a couple of the ugliest bag patterns I've ever seen.

nice book, handy size...wish i'd written a book, some of my own designs are a bit more professional. but for a beginner, it's really nice.

I have made only one bag so far - the pink shell bag. It was simple and looks great. I put some embellishments of my own on it. I can see making several of these bags for gifts, in different colors, different handles and trims. So for this pattern alone, it was worth the price.

However, some of the designs are uninteresting or even seem unpolished or amateurish.

Trisha Malcolm is the editor for this book and series but I think something happened to this one as usually the quality is pretty good on this series. First of all, many of the yarns used are very expensive like Trendsetter yarns. Second: since when are baskets considered bags? There's nothing here I want to make but check out the "Hooked bags" by Margaret Hubert which I gave 5 stars. So of the 22 bags only 20 are original here. You'll find a felted laptop bag and a yoga bag here and a freeform bag which calls for a large variety of hard to find materials. Hubert does have two nice clutches here but the yarns are fancier than what she used in her own book.

First off the Vogue knitting is a bit strange since the bags are crocheted but oh well.... the book is very good and has many types of patterns for many different uses. I have used it a few times and have been pleased with the bags I have made. It would be a good book for beginners.

Always a good publication...Vogue Crochet and knitting books. Best to update the yarns used, but the basic bag shapes are
there and very practical for todays market bags and purses. I gave it as a gift, but will buy one for myself.

I bought this for one specific bag, and found the one pattern I used had 4 major errors. NOT good! Fortunately, I found an errata link through Ravelry.
