The initial idea of Cry Before Dawn made my blood run cold: a late 80's Irish rock band with awful hair; a bellowing, angst-ridden vocal; using 'celtic' instruments to embellish their sound.....

My idea of hell for sure (except my sub-conscious one, the one that haunts and hurts my dreams.....), along with wedding receptions and slow drivers.
An Irish rock band; complete with shades, stonewash denim and earnest, youthful, James Dean pose; looking purposefully out from the dubious sleeve of their (gulp!) debut album. My suspicions were seriously aroused and I felt the jeering begin to rise in the back of my throat.
Luckily, I don't often go with my first instincts (I'd be a cultural vacuum if I did!) and yet again my bigoted misconceptions have been trounced back to the troubled seething psyche from whence they came and I sit once more, with my crossword, pipe and slippers, enjoying an excellent, unlikely album.

'Crimes of Conscience' has serious flaws but it overcomes them with simple graft, energy and no lack of solid song-writing talent. Proof comes in the shape of the two superb openers: 'the Seed That's Been Sown' and 'Girl in the Ghetto'.
CBD don't deal in rip-roaring attack but they're no strangers to quiet thunder; guitars peak, uilleann-pipes do....whatever uilleann-pipes do, and we've even got some Memphis-style soul backing singers fleshing out an already strong sound.
A memorable start, comparing favourably with the very best Irish rock albums, before or since.

'CoC' (!) doesn't quite match it's initial blast anywhere else in its grooves but it does manage to kick on quite successfully, with songs like 'Gone Forever' and particularly the stirring 'White Strands' keeping the goodly bits to the fore.

I love "Gone Forever".
I felt a touch of pathos in this song.
I heard this song 20years ago.
A melody line is wonderful.
Also, Guitar Harmonics is cool.
