I rated this 111 min REGION B/2 DVD as ok, I enjoyed the film although the beginning was a little slow, good acting by Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman but the story line was a little far fetched.
No nonsense combat veteran Captain Frank Ramsey (Hackman) and his newly installed first officer Ron Hunter (Washington) are caught in the middle of a global crisis. On board a nuclear submarine they're heading for Russia where radical nationalists are threatening to start World War 111. But when they receive an unverified message to launch their missiles, Ramsey and Hunter clash over the validity of the orders. With nuclear holocaust close at hand, mutiny erupts on the sub-pitting the entire crew against each other in a showdown that will decide the fate of the world

You can easily predict the outcome, but the actual end of the story is satisfying. The acting is as good as it gets and various twists and turns keep your attention. Overall a good movie is you like action drama. There is a lot of swearing but it is in context. It says 15 so I suppose standards have changed but I wouldn't watch it with a 15 year old daughter not necessarily because of the four letter words but some of the references in jokes might need explanation I would not want to be required to give.

Not reviewing the film although excellent in my opinion, (IMDB 7.3/10) this is for the Blu ray itself, the film is a 1995 so wasn't expecting too much due to age of film, however I have seen this on DVD and in my opinion this is a massive improvement in picture quality, this is a nice transfer, soundtrack is spot on too with 5.1 uncompressed audio, and presented in 2.40:1, have always liked this film but in this quality a joy to watch again. Highly recommended purchase.

Senior officers Gene Hackman and Denzil Washington star in a film about a mutiny on a nuclear submarine.

Hostilites between the USA and the USSR seem to have broken out again. When an incomplete order to open fire at an enemy target is received the two clash on its validy. With neither being prepared to back down, Denzil Washington leads a mutiny against his Captain knowing that the consequences of him being wrong are even more serious as his Captain being right.

Thus each of the crew is forced to take sides. As they fight for surpremacy, their submarine comes under attack from an enemy vessel. Even in this limited setting the action is fast and furious, and with a far from certain ending, there is much excitement and tension, is this highly charged claustrophobic atmosphere.

Give this a try, you will not be disappointed. So, sit back and enjoy.

Run Silent Run Deep
The Enemy Below
The Hunt for Red October
Crimson Tide

Probably the 4 best up periscope films ever made

This has it's 2 leads on top form, excellent supporting cast, sound plot and storyline

Possibly the mutiny on a mutiny was uneccessary, but a top film anyway

On a US nuclear missile sub, a young first officer stages a mutiny to prevent his trigger happy captain from launching his missiles before confirming his orders to do so.

Great cast, well acted all round, well directed, keeps you watching til the very end. Overall good film would recommend this to anyone.Well worth a watch and good value for money.

Good movie!
Audio is excellent (5.1) (DTS HD MA and LPCM) for those of us who wants the very best!
Video quality is also very good, with rich details.
A very good and breathtaking experience when Denzel and Hackman (among other excellent actors!) drives us thought the experience of a near nuclear strike over the old continent...

A classic 'lads movie'. The storyline is perhaps a little far fetched with the constant change of command and use of firearms aboard the Alabama. But it's a fun movie to watch and I would definitely recommend it

This film had the strapline: "tension you can chew" and that description is spot on. Hackman and Washington are perfectly cast as opposites in the claustrophobic and tense environment of a nuclear submarine. Not sure that the Blu-Ray is much better quality than the DVD, though...
