Product description

From Amazon.co.uk

This controversial film follows a handsome young priest, Padre Amaro (played by Gael Garcia Bernal from Y Tu Mamá También and Amores Perros), who arrives in a small town and finds himself surrounded by hypocrisy and corruption--and also finds himself tempted by a beautiful young woman who confesses that when she "touches herself," she thinks of Jesus. What makes El Crimen del Padre Amaro (The Crime of Father Amaro) particularly effective is that Amaro is no innocent--he skillfully forces a newspaper publisher to retract a scandalous story about the Church and is willing to take extreme steps to preserve his career. Some of the movie's harsher digs at the Catholic Church have provoked accusations of prejudice; but though Padre Amaro portrays a world in which no one's hands are clean, it also finds redeeming qualities in every character. A complex, completely engrossing movie. --Bret Fetzer --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

of course, i may be biased seeing as the leading actor (who plays father amaro) is the beautiful and talented Gael Garcia Bernal. despite that, this is a powerful and moving story of a handsome young priest who impregnates a sixteen year old girl during their acts of love.
with the dark humour and thought provoking ending, this is a must-see-again film. and if thats not enough... watch it just for Gael. it'll leave you breathless

Rather heavy on imagery and very predictable in terms of plot, this film still pulls through with the help of a strong cast and beautiful locations. Although projecting a rather dim view of the Catholic Church it didn't seem to attack it gratuitously as it focused on the different character flaws of the priests featured. To me this seemed to convey the fallibility of us all rather than attacking the Church as a whole. If you want to see a film critical of the Catholic Church then perhaps The Magdalene Sisters would be a better choice but worth seeing just for the chemistry between Gael Garcia Bernal and Ana Claudia Talancon.

Bit slow,maybe...but the acting is great! Please only if you are blind...

Although trying to bring it to the present days if you have ever read the famous book from which it was adapted and put it into the time context from when it was written, it wouldn't be so predictable as some said.

Nevertheless, life is predictable in many cases. This isn't a hollyood film, when an alien invasion happens without being expected. The beauty perhaps is the simplicity of real life and that you can't ran away from it...

People nowadays just go to the cinema to be impressed by unrealistic events... why not try also to be engage in real life situations?!

That's the difference between Hollywood films and the rest of the world.

This film caused quite an uproar in México and was only permitted to be distributed several years after completion.

It's theme is quite strident and to the uninitiated could be offensive. It tells a story that has elements of truth, especially given the state of the war between the Government and the drug traffickers that is currently taken place in México. It's content could also be unacceptable to Catholics.

I found the film "over the top" as it does not represent the México I know and love.

Interesting but not very entertaining. Not for the fainthearted!

You may buy this film, as I did, to see Gael Garcia Bernal, thinking that any film with him in can't be bad. Well....I think this one is a dud. The problems stem from a poor script, which is not rigorous enough in the treatment of its subject matter. This film deals with themes that have been the subject of numerous other films. I find that this film has nothing new to say, the plot development is lazy, giving the whole film paper-thin credibility.

I enjoyed this film. It arrived from Germany in record time and I loved seeing Gael Garcia Bernal in this role shedding light on a different era.
