Julie has worked for the last 5 years as Victim Support, she kept herself to herself never really dated and that's the way she liked it, one night while attending a domestic abuse scene she meet Rusty a fireman , she already knows his 2 brother one a cop the other a paramedic , she has met his brother quite a few time within her line of work, however Rusty after meeting her again at another scene cant shake there was something about her that he liked , he could talk to her and she understood , he was also intrigued by the mystery she kept around herself .
Julie felt comfortable with Rusty, she felt safe something she had not felt in a long while, however she had a past that was her dark secret, one she was trying to get far away from.
This story is well written, and deals with situations that are taboo, however they are dealt with in a matter of fact way, leaving the reader to make up their own mind.
This is a story of loss, betrayal, discovery and ultimately transcension
Rusty is a firefighter who Julie met several times when they were on the same scene. As a handsome fireman, Rusty has always had women coming on to him but Julie is different and he is not sure what to think of her. They are in each other's thoughts a lot and slowly build a relationship.
This book is well researched making the details on victims' advocates easy to follow. While it has many heart-breaking events, this story is a mystery with romance and a fantastic ending. Julie and Rusty's relationship progressed slowly which I really liked. So many authors have the couple fall in love or having sex instantly so that it makes the story unbelievable. That didn't happen in this book.
I had a hard time rating this book so I am giving it 3.5 stars.

This was a surprisingly heavy story. After reading the first story in this series, I was (admittedly) expecting this one to carry a similar vibe. But that got tossed out the window after reading Chapter 1.
Rusty and Julie's relationship was overshadowed by an unseen threat to Julie, a stalker who made it known they were out for their pound of flesh. Her fear and Rusty's urgency to protect her are damn near tangible. I won't lie, I felt chills at times reading this story.
But I also felt incredible warmth and joy. Unlike his brother Sam who admitted he was a one woman man, Rusty was more like a love-'em-and-leave-'em man but Julie made him want to be more than that if just for her. That's not to say he didn't influence change in Julie though. He did, just not in a way I thought he would.
It took me a bit to realize that Julie was only existing, keeping herself from others because of her past. But existing, even if you do so with a purpose, isn't living. With Rusty, she found the courage to live again, to grow, to be stronger than before, to move forward. The woman she was at the end was a stunning contrast to the woman she was at the beginning.
Ms. Clark is an author who knows what she's writing about. The details she puts into this story about what it means to be a Victims' Advocate are so well written that I had no problem understanding what these men and women do and how much abuse survivors can benefit from them. This was a fantastic story to read because the light and life at the end made all of the darkness throughout it worth reading.

I fell in love with the characters, Julie and Rusty, while becoming endeared to his brothers, Chris and Sam as well. Other characters in the story that were central to the storyline are so authentic, that you actually become connected to them in a real way.
I loved the story because while it does have elements of romance, the story was not romance based. It is a contemporary fiction story, with elements of suspense to keep your adrenaline pumping, and elements of romance to keep the heat flowing from the pages. This was a professionally, well-written story, which takes a look at real life adversities of abuse victims, emergency personnel, and true life challenges from a first responders perspective.
Ms. Clark did a wonderful job of weaving a tale of intrigue, and compassion with depth, and reality. The characters are relatable, and a hidden secret from one of the characters past can derail even the best laid protection plans. Ms. Clark did not miss a beat in this romantic suspense novel.
For those who want to know: the sex is moderately explicit but handled well. I like the way Julie and Rusty gradually became a couple as opposed to salivating at their first sight of each other.
Julie Lawrence is the Director of the Victim’s Advocacy Program so she works closely with people that are affected by disaster and domestic violence. She comes in contact with police, paramedics, and firefighters. When she runs into firefighter Rusty Wilson, everything changes. He can’t understand how she seems to have no interest in him while he attracts so many other women mainly just because he is a firefighter. He’s even posed in the Firefighter’s HOT Calendar. There is something about Julie that he can’t figure out. Julie goes to great lengths to make herself ordinary and unattractive. She keeps her distance from everyone and lives alone with a cat that adopted her. Unfortunately, her past will catch up with her just as she is starting to realize her feelings for Rusty.
There are several violent images in this book so it’s not for the faint at heart. The depictions were very honest and that’s what I liked the most about the book. It also shows how fearless and selfless people can be. There’s a mystery person that terrorizes Julie which adds an interesting twist that will keep you intrigued until the very end. I look forward to reading the third book in the series, Deep Night.
