This film was a lot better than I was expecting and I was gripped throughout. It is very violent and very dark at times (parts of it made me think of American Psycho). It easily earns an 18 rating with lots of sex, violence and bad language. A good story and some very funny bits involving a rather large lady (not for the easily offended).

It largely resists all the recent gangster movie cliches ... but still has a few... although not a Mockney in sight!

It borrows plot lines from "The Godfather part 2" ... sibling rivalry, a gangster wanting to go straight. Has a similar feel to "The Long Good Friday" in terms of realism, the violence is very real and the characters are genuine. I actually thought the acting was one of its strong points! ... maybe some of the acting is a bit OTT but not much.

This is a good film... a very good film...
Sadly, you maybe put off if you are thinking this is
another Guns and Geezers British gangster rubbish..
but it isn't!... This is a fine, and well directed crime
drama... You can't second guess, the plot here...
it is well ahead of you, unlike, most stupid Brit
Gangster films...

If you like Crime Drama... well made Crime Drama...
this is one for you... a great film... a real surprise.
I wouldn't be too surprise, if this gets a US reboot..

I found this British 2008 crime film watchable, but in its second half it disappointed me a little. Below, more of my impressions, with some limited SPOILERS.

Gerard "Ged" Brennan (Scot Williams) is a rather succesful gang boss, heading a "crew" of a dozen hardened criminals, specialized particularly in hijacking trucks with valuable goods. Amongst the most significant members of his "crew" are his younger brother Ratter (Kenny Doughty) and a gigantic heavy named Moby (Rory McCann, of "Game of Thrones" fame). "Ged" Brennan is respected by his fellow mobsters and he is particularly good friends with the local big boss, Franner (Stephen Graham) - but even though he was sollicited, he always refused to get involved into drug trafficking, aware of high risks involved.

When this film begins, "Ged" Brennan is living a particularly difficult moment in his life: his last "job" turned badly, one of his mob friends Leo "The Pig" Murphy was found murdered, his marriage is in trouble, he has a cash flow problem, which can jeopardize his participation in a highly profitable (and perfectly legal) land deal, his right hand Moby gets into a ton of trouble because of his sexoholism and as if all that was not enough, his younger brother approaches him with a completely unexpected and shocking proposition...

What follows is for most of the time a rather honest crime film, which I mostly enjoyed, excepted for some quasi-pornographic and rather disgusting scenes (I am not talking here about the rather harmless little scene of girl-on-girl action). Twenty five minutes before the end, everything was in place for a very dramatic and powerful great finale.

I bought this after seeing it on tele years ago and thought id get it being from Liverpool. As per its a load of geezers from the Wirral acting the biggen pretending to be scousers. Ok for a bit of fun and something to watch if your bored I suppose.

This film definitely lives up to the rave reviews it has had from the likes of Loaded. This is one of the best gangster movies I have seen and I agree with the previous review that it is much better than Rocknrolla. It has pretty much everything to keep you riveted throughout(though some scenes make you look away!).

If you want to upgrade your DVD of the enjoyable but violent Merseyside Mafia movie "The Crew" to BLU RAY and you live in the UK - it poses a problem on one hand...and a pricey alternative on the other...

The cheaper American BLU RAY on Image Entertainment is REGION A LOCKED - so it won't play on our machines unless they're chipped to be 'all regions' (which few are). But there's a EURO alternative on BLU RAY (I think it's a German Region B release) that will work without playback problems and has a good picture. Unfortunately it’s not cheap...

Look on Amazon.de for a good price and check the seller does 'International Shipping' – that’s your best bet…

A film based around a few gangs trying to make some money/showing whos 'boss' from a heist or 2 when things go wrong for the main charater in the film, A straight forward film.. It aint going to win any oscars for acting, action or story but it just runs smooth enough to be enjoyable.

sometimes you think why for the random acts of violence or cruelty but then make emmends for a few set pieces... (bloke with the glass table being one example.. :D)

With a bit more action or even with a bit more research look for something that actually happened (Rise of the foot soldier being one of the best for the kind of film here..) this couldve and shouldve been better... but with a small budget you just go with what youve got and this films decent enough for a watch.
