This product is advertised as being 'toughened' and 'metal utensil safe'. I would never try that even if allowed. So I was feeling safe. Alas, wrong.
In my case, after using it only 5 times with WOODEN utensils, the non-stick coating is already full of scratches. I really can't understand what kind of use others who left 5 stars do. Please see the photos, and please note that since the photos were taken more scratches appeared. Don't care too much anymore, yet still using wooden tools only.
I consider myself a logical man. So seeing those photos I would ask: How the hell there are scratches if using only wooden tools? Which wooden tool is so thin/sharp to create a scratch? Yep, it beats me. I really don't know how the scratches were formed. The only thing I know is that I used only a wooden spoon with this pan. I really don't want to consume more brain beyond that (eg types of food, washing method - which was a soft sponge with no hard side and soap), since this was supposed to be 'tough'.
I like cooking. For the first time I really wanted to purchase a 'good' (or 'semi-professional') product in order to make my cooking better. I generally take good care of all my possessings, and please take my word for it, this also applied in this pan. I even didn't let anyone else to use it or even wash it.
As a result, I feel deceived as a consumer and basically I feel stupid. Don't know why. I really thought paying 6 times the price of a 'plain' pan would make a difference.
So perhaps I would give it two stars for (indeed) nice heat distribution. The one remaining star was lost due to the poor Le Creuset support. I would expect a company selling 'high' quality products to be more sensitive when a complaint arrives. They simply said they are sorry, and told me to contact their representative in my country. I contacted their representative but they ignored me.
Thank you for your time
I have put it quite a few times in the dishwasher and it seems fine but you really don't need to.
A great plus point for me is that it is pretty light to lift for my creaky hands. It cooks evenly and nothing has ever burnt in it. It is also PFOA free, a very important point as many other non-stick pans, when heated, emit perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is linked to thyroid disease, infertility, and developmental and reproductive problems. PFOA fumes also kill birds like parrots, budgies etc, so if it kills them, it cannot be good for you.
So, with Le Creuset non-stick, rest easy - it is safe.
Le Creuset have care instructions enclosed with their pans and on their website which are really worth reading. Simple and straightforward, if followed, your pans will last a lifetime.
I have this 20cm shallow pan, also the 24cm frying pan and a range of their other non stick saucepans. All are superb. Highly recommended.
Mine is a multi induction hob that can work with any size/shape so this ended up being the wrong pan. Still, it cooks nicely so I will keep it.
Within months despite all the efforts above the pans surface became discoloured and lost its non stick. I contacted Le Crueset who asked that I return it to them under the ‘lifetime guarantee ‘. I duly did and they contacted me to say that the damage to the surface was my fault for overheating the pan (absolutely not). On this occasion they would send be a new pan as a good will gesture which they did. There was a proviso that this was a one off good will gesture, not to be repeated. So much for the lifetime guarantee.
The replacement pan has now gone the same way and I can assure you it’s been very well taken care of. Not sure I can be bothered with another patronising round with Le Crueset so I may well just bin it and move on.
A point to note though is that the smaller deep pan is still doing well.
I bought a Circulon Infinite frying pan about a year ago for a fraction of the price of the Le Crueset and this gets all the kitchen abuse. To be honest it still looks and performs like new, despite a daily bashing. I think this may be the way forward.
