By most people's standards, these are inexpensive, considering you are getting 6 speakers. They have a reasonable feel of quality to them, and the sub aside, I think the speakers look great.

    A few words of warning...

    * The little speakers and the sub, do not have protective grilles, and the speaker cones are exposed. Little pressing fingers may find some enjoyment here.

    * These are not the last word in audio technology, but given the price, I would say they really impress. I'm fairly fussy when it comes to audio, and even listening to music on them, they delivered a good performance.

    * The cables supplied are fairly short, around 1.2m max. Now of course you could buy extension cables, but they tend to be way overpriced, and you could end up spending the same value of the speakers again on extension cables.

The little speakers have captive cables and neatly plug into the sub with a connector that looks like an RCA type. The sub has three captive cables, mains power (it needs plugging in to a power socket), a three ended audio cable that plugs into the PC (front, rear and sub and centre), and a sort of flying lead on/off/volume control with a power LED on, this is the only cable that it would not be possible to extend, but then it doesn't have to be right next to you.

If you have a 5.1 source to connect them too, don't mind the seemingly endless spaghetti of cables and can accommodate them fairly close to your PC, they are a fine `value for money' investment.

These compact speakers are clearly a budget range intended for a small office or study, and are unlikely to produce enough noise to disturb the neighbours. They are quite well made, but have some minor niggles such as captive leads and all the drive units being exposed and vulnerable, especially the sub-woofer.

To achieve a well balanced sound, a graphic equaliser is essential as well as the bass-control on the sub-woofer. Power is modest and soon runs into distortion, so one tends to keep them quiet; which is just as well, as with louder bass one can also hear the wind whooshing in the folded reflex port before the amplifier clipping becomes too objectionable.

The construction is basic, mitigated by some clever moulding of the plastic surrounding the speakers in the satellite units. All leads are captive: the phono-plug wire to each satellite speaker is captive to that speaker and plugs into the sub-woofer; the "Remote" control pod, the three 3.5mm jacks, and the mains lead are all hard-wired to the sub-woofer box.

I tried them with a PC and also with an old DVD player that has a surround decoder and analogue outputs, and compared the A550 with my other surround systems, Logitech X-540 and Logitech Z-906. My test material was an assortment of high quality films known for their good surround sound or special surround effects as well as some ordinary music from CDs.

    Negative points.

I'm happy I got this speaker system, as it makes your experience very different. I'm using it with my TV, particularly science fictions and war films you'll see what I mean. You'll hear a helicopter flying somewhere behind your right ear, some body screaming far away from your left and so on - so much fun. The deep bass sound comes from the sub-woofer, and I'm slightly worried about my neighbours downstairs, so I have to put the volute down a bit.

A couple of minor problems are while it will make your living room like a private cinema (in a way), the cables will surround you too. You'll need to put two of the small speakers behind you, so two cables will be visible and I'm not too happy about it. I'm not bad at DIY, so I'll try to do something about it by putting them away from my sight, but they are not very long, so I don't know what to do about them. At the moment they are still lying on the floor, which is not very nice.

Second point is that although it's good system for the price, you may miss some more quality - obviously you get what you pay for so for more quality you'll need to pay more. So if you're looking for a good sound and appreciate your Blu-rays more, you might want to get slightly more expensive speaker system.

Anyway, apart from these points I love it and if you're a film lover just try it. Especially if you already own a good SONY or Panasonic TV and enjoying the great picture but haven't had a chance to improve the sound quality, I highly recommend this system!

    Hope this helps.

I bought this as an impulse buy, then realizing it was low wattage (RMS), plugged it all in and tested it, Wow! the sound quality is great, even on max volume. No distortion what so ever. if you're looking for a cheap 5.1 surround sound for your PC, id recommend this to any gamer's that are fed up of having headphones, this system truly is an amazing bit of kit
