This book is a joy to read and scribble in. Yes, really: it's an interactive book with space to draw your thoughts as you work through each of Melissa's precepts for Living Creatively in handy chapter form. There are colouring pages and doodles aplenty and it's a joy to work through. I especially love the Contents pages—for those of us who think in pictures I wish more books did this!

Attributing negative self-talk to gremlins is not a new idea, but encouraging your gremlins to go and get pedicures is certainly a new one! I spent a very happy half hour imagining sending gremlins off for a pedicure and then sketching what happens afterwards (hint: in my scenario they can’t keep up when you run because they don’t want to smudge those newly polished claws!). This is just one example of the brilliant ways Melissa encourages you to look differently at the challenges that anyone wanting to live more creatively faces.

Chapter 10 provides one of the nicest, kindest, most compassionate ways anyone has described picking yourself up, dusting yourself down, and getting back on the wagon. Probably ever. If you were to read the book and take only of Melissa's rules to heart, I sincerely hope it’s this one. It applies to SO much more than art and creativity. Though art and creativity provide some great scenarios to practice self-compassion! ;)

The Creative Sandbox Way helped me unblock and loosen up my creative practise. Melissa is full of energy and kindness which shines through in this book. I loved the way she taught me to recognise my 'gremlins' and the process of trying to create 'ugly' art was so revealing.
Not only will this book help with your creative blocks, it will also help you understand yourself better, and be kinder to yourself.
Thank you Melissa for sharing this delight.

Melissa's book is a warm, humorous guide to building a creative practice and unleashing your creativity. It gently yet firmly leads you through 10 "rules" that help you remove the barriers and rediscover your innate playful, creative nature. Beautifully put together, with oodles of space for your thoughts, experiments and reflections, as well as loads of doodles to play with as you wish, this really is a collaborative, interactive book. There is plenty here to go back to again and again, as this is about a practice and a continual learning process. The lessons shared, and which you are encouraged to discover for yourself, apply not only to your creativity, but to many wider aspects of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Inspiring Book! 30 Dec. 2016
By Morgine - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This book ENCOURAGES you to make lots of crap! “You need the crap to fertilize the good stuff!” Melissa shares. She has a Facebook group where we share our “ugly” drawings or coloring in the many Doodles she includes throughout the book! Step by small step she brings your Creativity BACK TO LIFE again!

She has inspiring quotes throughout the book: “We need to give ourselves the space and freedom to make ugly messes, because the pressure to only produce amazing work is paralyzing…Just because you allow yourself to create crap doesn’t mean you will…. It just means you’ll create. Other people see your work for what it is. You see your work for what it isn’t. “

I have found in my life that CREATIVITY is as important as love, happiness and joy. We were born to be creative, period. We are creating all the time with our thoughts and actions every day, except we rarely take time to RELAX and just PLAY, even for just 5 minutes a day!! This book can Literally Transform your life! Doing these simple things can Affect all the other areas of your life. In a couple of weeks you can have more energy, you smile more often, you keep some colored pens or pencils out to just color in a flower during a stressful moment and answers arise while you are focused on coloring! It can bring new Life to your life!

There are many Simple Things which can have a huge impact on our lives when we incorporate them into our daily life. In actuality they don’t take a lot of time. Doing things we enjoy and having fun doing, actually improve our brain function and have been proven to extend our lives! We just need to Make Time for them and this is one of those things!! I highly recommend this book to anyone searching for the Missing Link in their life! Just adding 5 minutes here and there might bring you through your challenges of daily life and onto the other more joyful side!

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure...a unique, fun experience in this hands-on manual to your creativity 15 Nov. 2016
By Dr. Angela Kowitz Orobko - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Remember falling down the rabbit hole with Alice to Wonderland or following Charlie into Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory… “hold your breath…count to 3… come with me, and you’ll be in a world of imagination.” Melissa’s book is indeed a work of creativity to guide you to your own world of imagination and creativity. Let go of perfectionism, start anywhere, and delight in the experience as I did. What I most liked about “The Creative Sandbox Way: Your Path to a Full-Color Life” was her witty style and presentation, as well as her unique, fun perspective in this hands-on manual to your creativity. I was among a privileged few who received an advanced PDF version of her book to review. Upon first glance, I was hooked. I cannot wait for to receive the paper version when I can really savor it with my coloring implements. In fact, I am buying no less than three copies, as it makes a fabulous gift. I highly recommend this book and encourage you to get more than one copy, because you are going to want to share this treasure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love when I get time to "play!!" 2 April 2017
By J. Abraham - Published on Amazon.com

I'm only 1/4 of the way through my Creative Sandbox exploration, but I am enjoying it very much. I have stayed on Guidepost #2, "think process not product," for some extra time. I'm having FUN, I'm finding JOY in the process, I'm ignoring my inner critic, leaving worry and perfectionism behind, and just letting stuff happen! This book is pleasurable to return to just to see what will happen next! I'm feeling unexpectedly FREE after years of controlling every part of my artistic endeavors!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have guide if you have a demanding job and very little time to play. 23 Jan. 2017
By CW Creative - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
If you're a busy professional who needs to carve time in your life for creativity, then this is the book for you. It's a practical, down to earth guide on how to keep your creative soul nurtured even if, like myself, you're deep in the midst of a demanding job while still taking care of your relationship (I'm married), your social life and then of course there's that annoying thing called sleep to demanding time as well.

Using the principles in this book, I'm able to take care of my job's demands, keep my marriage happy and see friends and family while keeping my creative spirit satisfied. This is the kind of relief that is hard to measure in money, but frankly the price of this book feels like a steal when I consider the positive impact it's had on my life.

This book has totally changed my life as an artist and I am creating more, and on a more regular basis, than I ever have in my life. Melissa's method really gets to the heart of the things that keep us from creating, and gives us a clear, concise workable plan for creating everyday that has totally changed my life, elimitated the demons of guilt and procrastination and turned me into a creation machine,.creating something every single day, having much more energy and feeling so much happier in my work, and about ME. Everybody I know who considers themselves an artist or other creative person should read this book. Melissa has helped me soooooooo much and in such an overwhelmingly positive, encouraging way!!!
