This book is primarily for people who don't know much at all about recording processors, but truth is, you'll learn more buying relevant magazines. I bought this and the advanced book and it was much the same stuff expanded upon. Not enough practical setups and exercises to be of much value to a real recording musician, more a basic reference for those wanting to understand how processors are used in recording.

This is OK as an overview and introduction. But, the illustration given is for the larger format volumes and this isn't one, note the dimensions given. The other books in this series, 2003 editions, "Creative Recorting, Parts 2 & 3", are the larger format - 21.6 x 27.6 cm, while this 2003 edition is 17.8 x 22.9 cm - similar to the 1993 edition of Part 2 (see below). AND ~ it comes with a solid yellow cover with the print for the title and author in black and white, including a small illustration of play buttons ~ > || |< >| [] 0

Paul White's books are a good starting point for anyone wanting an easy introduction to the topic. Also in this particular series:

"Creative Recording 2: Microphones, Acoustics, Soundproofing and Monitoring"
Creative Recording: Part 2
& in the smaller format, the earlier edition:
Creative Recording: Microphones and Recording Techniques v. 2

"Creative Recording 3: Recording on the Move" (live!)
Creative Recording 3: Recording On The Move

Not forgetting his 'Basic' series, available individually or in parts, for example:

"Studio Recording Basics" 4 volumes each:
Studio Recording Basics B (Basic Home Studio Design, Microphones, Midi & Mastering)
Studio Recording Basics A (Basic Mixing Techniques, Effects & Processors, Multitracking & Mixers)

I would thoroughly recommend this book for anyone is at an early stage with learning sound engineering. We just started out at our own studio, and this book really helped me get up to speed. Particularly useful sections on compressors. Clear, practical advice, and everything is well explained. The second book is more intended for those who are building their own studio, so it came in handy for us. (Most of the stuff on mic placement in that book can be found on the net anyway.) Part 1 is the business though.
