Installed the card in the PCIe x1 slot, installed the drivers provided on the accompanying CD, connecting to my AV amp via SPDIF to run the 5.1 surround sound. The card eventually worked once I disabled my motherboard’s on-board sound but the only immediate difference I noticed was in amplification & nothing more. I’d also installed all of the bundled software for the card but didn’t have time to play around with any of it for 2 days.
So for 2 days I just had increased volume which was okay for all those films with poor sound but once I opened the pro studio software nothing appeared to work. So I went to the creative website to download the latest drivers & the suite started to work.
The sound changed dramatically, the bass had loads more depth, maybe too much but I was loving the change anyway as I listen to of lot of music. Then about an hour later I noticed all my audio was clipping intermittently for no reason, even dialogue was being clipped in movies.(clipping is where the system purposely restricts the sound when it exceeds a certain level to protect the speakers). This was strange as the system volume was only at 80% & even at lower volumes it still continued to clip all audio constantly. When I disabled the card & tried my on-board sound everything went back to sounding normal so I re-installed the drivers for the Creative Z & tried again but the clipping returned.
Googled the problem & found 2 other people had the same problem in 2015, they contacted Creative who advised them to re-install the drivers which didn’t help them or me so I decided against the hassle, returned the product & reverted back to my HDMI connection from my graphics card to amp.
It’s definitely a software issue as no clipping took place until I got the software suite working & no the clipping wasn’t a result of my card overheating as I have adequate cooling in my pc. I even left the side panel off & still experienced the same problem. I returned the card back to Amazon a week later for full refund.
I bought this soundcard after realising my onboard audio was.... honestly, abit s**t. I didn't expect much, I care alot about audio quailty, I wouldn't say I'm an audiophile, maybe a step below that, I never really thought about my PC's audio. I'm sure I'm in the same boat as most people who just think about the CPU, RAM and graphics card primarily when upgrading our rigs, maybe even hard-drives or whatever, but a soundcard never really crossed my mind since Asus start putting decent enough quadio chips on their ROG boards. The second my PC booted up after the 5 minute maximum installation time I instantly heard a difference, JUST IN THE WINDOWS STARTUP SOUND! I hadn't even installed drivers yet, so I thought it might have been a placebo effect. After the annoying task of installing and updating drivers (which I've heard many negative things about , so was abit nervous about performance) PC booted, went straight to my FLAC music folder and played some good old fashioned Nine Inch Nails....... holy mother of pearl. I genuinley was NOT expecting this much of a noticable upgrade. The bass is heavy and rich, the overall sound is so smooth compared to my onboard audio. I never realised just how essesntial a sound card really is, alot of audiophiles will swear DAC's are superior which I'm sure is true, but I ain't an audiophile, I'm PC'er lol.
I have to say that the sound quality of the on-board sound was quite excellent because I have a bang up to date windows 10 video editing and gaming rig which I built my self, and I chose an AS Rock AB350 Gaming K4 which comes with HD sound..however I had one major issue..i couldn't get Rocksmith 2014 to play properly the sound kept glitching buzzing and crackling..I tried everything I could, using advanced sound settings to sort it out but nothing would work.
I contacted Steam support and Ubisoft support but nothing they suggested would sort out the sound issue I had with Rocksmith, I changed the sound chip drivers several times and they were always installed correctly as where my video card drivers.
Someone mentioned to me on a forum that there can be issues between Realtek on-board sound chip drivers and windows 10.
So I bough this Sound card and I'm happy to report three weeks later after instillation that the sound problems I had with Rocksmith are now completely gone.
This sound card has an excellent Headphone Amp an upgrade of around 10% over the on-board headphone amp and I have to say way Louder
and also a 24bit DAC which really makes the sound sparkle, and a real plus for me is the addition of the on board front panel header so I can still plug my headphones in to the front panel as I use my headphones a lot
Reinstall drivers worked a treat til next reboot. Spent some time working on it. Removing and trying the card in a different PC.
Sounded great and TOSlink input was great. Until reboot then couldn't get it to work without distortion (And I mean distortion - glad I dont own a dog as this might have driven it nuts. :)
Avoid this with windows 10 currently as the drivers are awful.
