I bought this camera for my Windows Vista system (my PC is top end and only a few months old) and I am extremely unhappy with the product. The audio does not work unless I use the supplied headphones/microphone. It is supposed to have built-in audio but so far I have not been able to make it work. The video quality is poor and motion tracking is appalling.
I gave up on this product and purchased the Microsoft Life Cam VX-6000. It was plug and play with no problems whatsoever. In less than 5 minutes it was working and I am very pleased. I recommend you avoid the Creative Live Cam when running Windows Vista and go for the Microsoft Life Cam.
The picture quality is excellent, even in my study which is quite a dark room. Installation was straight forward and everything worked first time on my Vista PC. You get a headset in the box but I prefer to use the microphone in the webcam and my PC speakers.
There are some fun features in the software which add effects to your video and even your voice. It's funny to hear the kids playing around with their friends - sounding like robots or chipmunks! There's lots of other software but my favourite is definitely the video and voice effects - and the password lock which stops the kids using the webcam without my permission.
In summary I'd say a great webcam for all the family - 5 stars!
The picture quality is awesome, just having the auto focus is enough, record video, images, manipulate images, create avatars, good microphone - no need for a seperate one, and links perfectly with Skype.
I've been using this camera with Skype to talk to my friend in Perth WA and have had no issues whatsoever. GO FOR IT!
I am very sorry to say that despite a 2.8Ghz processor this camera would not record video at 680X480 resolution without being jumpy and out of synch.
The problem appears to be software, which is massively heavy compared to the Logitech model I have. It seems to be much the same as used by the Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000, which also had tragic performance.
If you are looking for a good general webcam then the Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 is great, but this Optia is more for the kids.
Getting the image quality tuned in on this is dreadfully difficult compared to the Logitech.
I have now sent for a Philips SPC1300NC/00 to try.
Where this product falls down -: its not as simple as it makes out to install it and in the absence of any form of technical support, I had to pay someone to install and reconfigure it. There are two main issues here.
Firstly, the manual/user guide has been written by someone who knows the product well but not from the perspective of the person trying to use it to identify and solve problems. For example you may have to know that your motherboard or hub could be a problem, to get to the bit in the manual which confirms your thoughts in the first place.
Secondly, I had to install some CODEC software to make it work and oh yes, for some unknown reason, it knocked my printer out?
Would I buy it, definitely, provided you either know some one who can help you install it, or your a techy type. On the whole, brilliant product, rubbish support.
