I've got most of Dorothy Wood's beading and jewellery books and love the way she wrote those, so when I became interested in Hardanger embroidery and saw she'd written a book on the topic I hit 'add to basket' immediately:) Glad I did, this is a very good book with the usual Dorothy Wood writing style that teaches, and gives encouragement to spread one's crafty wings - will I do many of the projects in this book - likely not, but the charts she provides are easy to use for other projects. I was able to create a lovely sampler chart from the charts which is half stitched and really lovely.

The first pages are an excellent (as usual with DW) examination of the history, fabrics (especially helpful as she discusses drape and which fabrics to use for each purpose), tools, materials, and first steps to Hardanger then become a bit of a stitch dictionary with excellent diagrams showing how to accomplish the stitches.

The one niggle is the lack of crystal clear cutting instructions but Anchor and JP Coates websites both have such outstanding videos I couldn't drop a rating star on this book. Cutting is addressed in each project but newcomers to Hardanger would be well served to watch the videos before having a go with Hardanger scissors!

The section is over 50 pages of stunning projects. She gives step-by-step instructions for creating the gorgeous projects in the book - few to my tastes or needs but stunners and there is something here for anyone. The book closes with full colour DMC colour tables and supplier lists.

An excellent addition to the home stitcher library, I'm glad I bought this!

3.0 out of 5 stars A beginners look at hardanger 22 Aug. 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is my first book on hardanger after doing some basic stitches from a kit. I am excited by the many projects in this book because they are so different from the usual table runners, etc. that I've seen in other books. The pictures of the projects are great and there are clear pictures of the completed stitches in both the stitches section and projects section. However, there are some problems with the instructions on how to complete some of the stitches. I became very frustrated with one of them in the stitches section and even though there were better instructions in the project section, at least one stitch never was explained very well. I have not yet done any of the projects, but am truly looking forward to doing some of them. I am glad I purchased the book for the beautiful projects.

4.0 out of 5 stars hardanger 26 Mar. 2013
By margaret m. gavin - Published on Amazon.com

Beautiful book, excellent photos but a little skimpy on how to create some of the fancier stitches. This is not really a beginner's book but meant for someone very familiar with hardandger and most needlework shops would not carry some of these fabrics that Ms Wood is using. They would have to be special ordered or ordered on line.
3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay 17 Aug. 2016
By T. Del Giudice - Published on Amazon.com

The photography is nice and there are some ideas in here. As others noted, it can be frustrating when there isn't quite enough information on the shown stitches. For example, the weaving on the pillow on the cover. She tells you to wrap the bars in both directions, making an X. But she doesn't say how exactly. There are some okay patterns in here but it's nothing special imho.
