Iconic nut job Kinski gives a powerful understated performance in David Tourist Trap [Blu-ray]Puppetmaster (BLU-RAY) [1989] Schmoeller's quirky mid 80's potboiler. Kinski plays Dr. Karl Gunther, the unbalanced son of a Nazi who grew up in Argentina and now lives in the US renting rooms to pretty girls like bespectacled cutie Talia Balsam.

The problem is he's addicted to murder by his numerous deadly traps that he scatters around the apartment complex while he pervs on the sex lives of his tenants. Dr. Kinski also keeps a miserable wretch in a cage as a pet gloating about how he had to cut her tongue out.

Some elements of the film work quite well and a lot of the trap ideas prefigure the mighty Saw franchise. Kinski makes for a convincing voyeur obsessed with an addiction to killing and his justification for his crimes comes from surviving the occasional game of russian roulette. Other ideas like a skirting board opening that ejects a rat into a tenant's rooms wouldn't be out of place in a Tom & Jerry cartoon and a silly Nazi hunter subplot is seen off with an undeniably amusing spike where the sun don't shine.

What is really amazing about the movie is detailed in the incredible extra Please Kill Mr. Kinski. This legendary short/making of has Schmoeller reminiscing about the awful experience of working with the legendarily temperamental actor, who forbade him to say action, cut or give any kind of guidance to his performance.Read more ›

Cinemas greatest lunatic (both on camera and off) Klaus Kinski plays a demented landlord who in his previous career as doctor in South america had developed a taste for killing off his patients that became a full blown addiction. In his new role as landlord he fills his daily impulses through watching his female tenants from the crawlspace that stretches throughout the house and tormenting them with strange noises and rats. Eventually when things go too far he ends up killing a tenant and has to find a replacement. Each night he takes a bullet, loads a chamber and puts the gun to his head playing a game of russian roulette. When the gun fails to kill him he say's 'so be it' and continues his demented hobby's (and I haven't even mentioned the Nazi fetishism inspired by his war criminal father yet!)

Shot in Italy for Charles Band's Empire pictures Crawlspace is a short but great looking thriller thanks to Sergio Salvati's excellent photography. We also get a great score from Pino Donaggio. The whole package is well directed by David Schmoeller who delivers a great film in what can only be described as 'difficult circumstances'. He also made a short documentary on his experience called 'pleas kill mr Kinski' which turns up on the SF blu-Ray and is an amusing watch though Werner Herzog's MY BEST FIEND is still the definitive look at the torment of working with Kinski. The thing to remember however is that as difficult as Kinski was, if a director could stick it out and complete his film the end performance was always astonishing. Here in Crawlspace it's a large reason why the film works so well. We also get a dry but informative commentary from David Schmoeller and and interview from effects artist John Vulich. It looks fantastic on Blu-ray and is the best presentation of the film to date. Sadly it's all region locked as usual so here's hoping Arrow decide to release it over here.

Doctor Karl Gunther likes to rent his apartments to carefully selected young ladies.

Crawlspace is a great 1986 slasher film with elements that would crop up in what is now known as "torture Porn". Klaus Kinski plays the good doctor, the son of a Nazi surgeon, and is on top form, whether setting up his elaborate devises, talking to the mute tongueless woman he keeps in a cage, flirting with and spying on the girls or simply sat quietly at his kitchen table with a revolver. Talia Balsam (daughter of Psycho's Martin Balsam and the Ex-wife of George Clooney) makes a cute final girl.

Director David Schmoeller (Tourist Trap, Puppet Master) delivers the creepy goods expertly and in one scene featuring Tane' McClure even throws in a parody of both his own ridiculous proto-erotic-thriller, The Seduction, and DePalma's Dressed to Kill. The lush score by DePalma regular, Pino Donaggio, really punches it into genius and is great throughout the rest of the film. Interestingly, Crawlspace was shot on location in the same apartment block as Troll!

The DVD is in widescreen and features the original trailer.

Crawlspace is an oddity. It features Klaus Kinski in a scenery chewing role as a german landlord in america who keeps a tongueless woman as a pet and slides through the tenements crawlspaces playing voyeur to the female only residents. He turns away any male lodger, and loves his girls.
The rest of the cast attempt to keep up with him, and so does the script.
Watching it you'll wonder why he likes to make scratching noises in the crawlspaces, and why he goes on a demented killing spree towards the end since he's lived happily with his perversions and his daily russian roulette game for years.
That aside, it's a totally enjoyable horror/thriller.
