Graphics are fantastic, the colours really pop and the detail is brilliant. We have a PS4 pro and a 4k TV, we've really noticed a difference in quality compared to playing the crash remaster last year on the basic PS4. I hear lots of hard core gamers are complaining about the amount of loading screens, honestly for me this was expected given it's not really a story game (there is one but honestly who here is buying CTR for the story lol) and you hop from race to race a lot meaning lots of loading tracks and leaderboards. Personally I think it loads quite fast and you have the option to turn off cut scenes and press triangle to skip.
Adventure mode on easy has been a little too easy I'll be honest, I've done nearly everything and lots of the relics/ctr tokens and we've not had the game a week yet. For me that's fast. But that hasn't taken away any love for the game, I've been able to familiarise myself with the controls, tracks and bosses. And now I feel more confident to kick the difficulty level up a notch!
I like the addition of earning coins for every race you do, these coins are the in game currency that you can then spend in the pit stop on all elements of the kart plus different characters/wheels/stickers/paint jobs etc etc. It brings something more fun to the game, though it would have made it more interesting if these upgrades did effect your performance on the vehicles or on the character stats. Give you a reason to want to earn the coins other than for aesthetic reasons (or in my case because 100% of a game is the only way you complete it)
I also think that during adventure mode there could have been more to do that doesn't involve racing. So you spend a bit of time driving from race to race; and back to do other things like relic races once the area is complete. I think it would have added a little something extra if there was coins, wumpa fruit, stickers or something like that to collect out in the map rather than just coins for finishing a race. Exploring everywhere is fun, it's even more fun when there is a reason to search every nook and cranny!
In conclusion I've thoroughly enjoyed playing CTR again finally after all these years. Because up to 4 players can play in local mode the whole family play on it, though my 9 year old son and his 9 year old best friend from next door are no match for me and his mum 🤣 it's been brilliant showing the kids that they're not the best gamers and when it comes to old school reboots the parents are the ones in first place!
Thank you Activision for finally bringing back decent gaming, more crash and more spyro next year please!
I’ve edited my review due to Activision adding micro-transaction post launch and avoiding backlash, which is exactly what I suspected would happen when I originally reviewed this game. It needs to be made known, particularly to those who purchase this game for young children, that in-game-purchases are in this game and Activision are going to start aggressively shoving them in our face.
Original Review:
This game has been remade remarkably well, just like how the Crash and Spyro games were.
The graphics on Crash Team Racing Nitro- fueled are great, there are little bit that have been added to levels and cut scenes, but none of it feels out of place, I'm sure these additions could have even made it in to the original if they had the capability at the time.
This controls will take some getting used to again if you've been playing a lot of modern driving games, but that's not a downside as it mimicks how the original game used to play.
At the moment of writing this (June 25th) the game has no micro-transactions or loot boxes, which is rare now for games but highly welcome! Although there is a storefront within the game which uses a coin based currency, which can be earned by completing races for roughly 30 coins per completion, it does worry me that micro-transactions may be added in the future, which would bring this rating down for me.
It’s even better than I thought it would be, it’s insanely good fun, the new online mode adds a hole new dimension to the game.
If you enjoyed the PS1 version you’ll absolutely love this version, go ahead and buy it!
It might yet be good as a multiplayer game - I honestly haven’t tried yet - but for a solo player this is frustrating.
I’m giving this two stars because the graphics are wonderful and the levels are addictive, but unfairly difficult.
The graphics look amazing, controls easy to use and really enable for all the family to play. I prefer the two player mode, as three and four player have smaller area on the TV screen.
I used to play the original PS1 CTR and thought I was pretty good. But my kids can beat me on the PS4. I better practice some more :-)
I bought this game to play with my family on my TV but the split screen is just awful. I understand that PS4s are generally bad for local multiplayer games, but this game was initially made FOR it, so it's a huge letdown really. I haven't tried the online mode yet, and I don't think I really want to either. Unfortunately returning this for a refund - real shame!
Also, the controls are so unintuitive.
