WE ARE SCIENTISTS Crap Attack (2006 UK 15-track CD featuring a collection of exclusive recordings B-sides remixes and their cover versions of Sigur Ross Hoppípolla 50s classic Be My Baby & Art Bruts Bang Bang Rock & Roll along with a bonus DVD containing music videos for all twelve tracks from With Love And Squalor and the full sold-out Shepherds Bush Empire concert from 2006 picture sleeve CDVUSX287)
It says an awful lot about the sly, eyebrow-curled approach of We Are Scientists that this collection of rarities, B-sides, and remixes is christened Crap Attack. Rather than sounding like a distinctly cobbled-together collection of off-cuts, however, many of these songs have the wit and wisdom to stand on their own feet. Sounding not unlike The Strokes the other side of an irony injection, these New York rockers combine brainiac experimentation with a nicotine hookiness that makes the likes of "The Great Escape" sparkle even after a gentle acoustic reworking ("...Under The Sea") or reshod with marching electronic rhythms, synth squelches and tapped cowbells ("(The Silence Remix)"). It wouldn't be a rarities collection if there wasn't some space for some amusing oddities see "Sie Hat Was Vermisst", an epic slice of gothic grandeur and shimmering, reverb-heavy guitars, with vocals spoken in heavy German. But even when they're appropriating other people's songs see an ethereal take on Sigur Ros' "Hoppipolla", or their reworking of Art Brut's "Bang Bang Rock'n'Roll" that sees frontman Keith Murray sing "I don't like the sound/Of the Velvet Underground" in classic Lou Reed drawl they remain endearingly idiosyncratic and endlessly entertaining. --Louis Pattison

As it says in the booklet, which contains information about every song on the CD: ''Some of what's contained on this disc is pretty odd'', and so it is, but I managed to find myself some catchy new favourites that I can easily play over and over. A lot of these tunes were written and recorded alongside the songs that make up the band's excellent second album 'With Love and Squalor', released in 2006, and to me, a few were good enough to have made the final cut. Other inclusions here are B sides, remixes, and some interesting cover versions, including their take on British Art band Art Brut's 'Bang Bang Rock & Roll', and a cute and catchy 'Be My Baby', by 1960s girl group The Ronettes.
The accompanying DVD is equally worthwhile. It features a video to all 12 songs on 'With Love and Squalor', a live show which was filmed at Shepherd's Bush Empire in London 2006, as well as two promotional adverts for With Love and Squalor, and a commentary by the band, on 'stuff'.
Great band, great music, vocals and guitar-playing, if you like We Are Scientists, young men with a similar sound to the likes of The Pigeon Detectives, Maxïmo Park, and The Futureheads, you'll enjoy the 'Cr*p Attack' CD/DVD compo.
This album is a great collection of b sides, covers and re-works which when brought together make a great listen. Definitely a CD you can listen to again and again because of the variation and execution of the songs. The vocals are superb given the range of songs and the guitar work is expressive.
I loved the cover of sigur rós "Hoppípolla" and the energy/lyrics of "Ram It Home".
If you like WAS or are just curious about them then ignore the title (the CD is not scratch and sniff) and buy this album.
Take a look at their previous album "With Love and Squalor".
I would recommend getting this just for the DVD itself, which contains a WAS's gig in Shepherds Bush Empire!
A must have for WAS fans!
The speed of the delivery was also impressive.
He loved the CD and we look forward to watching the DVD too - great value for money to get the CD and DVD in one set.
The service was deadly,I live in Dublin and i recieved my album in a week..I'll use them again!
