About the Author

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (29 September 1810 – 12 November 1865), often referred to simply as Mrs. Gaskell, was an English novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. She is perhaps best known for her biography of Charlotte Brontë. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of society, including the very poor, and as such are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature.

My mum showed me the 2007 film of this. Then intrigued I decided to buy the book. My ill feeling is not at all towards the book it the film. If you have seen it then you know that the two big parts of it are Lady Ludlow &co. And Dr Harrison, and Sophie Hutton and their plights. None of that is in there. Whoops BBC.
However if you take it slowly this book is a true classic of it's time. Anyone who gives it a bad review due to the language and plot then you are not doing it justice because hey it's set in 1842.

This is a lovely, gentle and at times humorous take on life amongst the ladies of Cranford in the early 1800s. Appearances and doing the right thing are everything, and the observations on life are both touching and funny. Some of the phrases are brilliantly understated – I particularly loved the gentle criticism that someone was “deficient in the spirt of natural curiosity”.

Harsh reality intrudes at times but the residents join together to support their friends and neighbours. A lovely heartwarming novel.

Elizabeth Gaskell is a fabulous writer. Her characters come alive from the pages and it is threaded through with an equal measure of joys and sorrows. The thing that shouts the loudest though is the complete kindness of friends and neighbours. A lesson for today maybe?
If you're expecting it to be like the TV series you will be disappointed. Taken on it's own merit it sparkles.

Simple and charming, with a sense of humour. Gentle stories of a bygone era. Having watched the DVD I think I enjoyed the book even more. Enchanting!.

Cranford is a wonderful insight to the genteel way of living a hundred or so years ago. The story tells of the very sheltered, gentle life of a group of ladies, and draws one in to their way of living. A most relaxing and well told story.

Such beautiful language and comforting to know one isn't going to be bombarded with violence and sex. A true classic to be read and re-read time and again and it doesn't lose any of its charm.
