I spotted this jacket which seemed to fit the bill and it was available for a brilliant price. It looks good, fits well, seems to be of high quality and most importantly protects you from the elements. For the last few months it has dealt with a typical Scottish winter very well. I wouldn't go out with just a t-shirt underneath it in extreme cold or anything, but I'm very pleased with it.
Plenty of pockets - zipped and otherwise - and a few toggles to adjust the fit. I noticed another reviewer had a problem with the hood and not being able to see where they were going without having a hat on underneath. I have noticed this on other jackets with loose hoods, but thankfully it hasn't been an issue for me, with the firm peak to the hood not allowing it to droop down and impede my vision.
As far as quality goes it is very good, as you would expect with Craghoppers' branding. The Aquadry material seems excellent and the manufacture is excellent, in fact I was surprised when I noted on the label that it was made in China. The stitching is good, overlocking good and the zips are decent quality.
I do have a few issues with design. The hood fixture to the main body of the garment is very good but the hood itself is massive and the volume adjustment is pretty poor. In order to wear it with the hood 'up' I have to wear a hat otherwise, despite ages messing with the draw cord and Velcro adjustable tab on the hood, it drops down and I can't see where I'm going. Also, the peak is a flimsy bit of plastic. I'm not a great fan of Velcro on outdoor garments so the Velcro fixing on the storm flap doesn't meet with my approval. Did I say 'storm flap' - it's a joke really and I wouldn't want to spend a long time in inclement weather because I think it would allow water ingress to the zip. Whilst the fit of the jacket is good, the sleeves are miles too long. I know I'm a bit of a short house (5-10) but they comes down below my hands. I'm sure that I read in the blurb that you can fit a OS map into the inside pocket - in yer dreams - although I guess you can fit anything in there if you fold it enough times :-) Also, the inside pocket is inside - and you have to open the storm flap and the zip to access it - wouldn't want to do that in the pouring rain.
These are all minor points but collectively - well, they make a difference.
Practically I have found the garment to be as advertised - ie windproof, waterproof (1 1/2 hrs in heavy rain) and breathable. It is comfortable to wear, and keeps you very warm and just the job for dog walking. Not sure that I would want to wear it on the hill though. At the Amazon price it is excellent value for money.
As you may know the jacket is not padded or insulated which is perfect for layering in colder weather and allows it to be worn as a shell in warmer wetter weather.
The jacket is very well made, all stress points are double stiched and it comes with a lifetime guarantee from crag hoppers.
The colour "dark cedar" is the perfect woodland "camouflage" colour, and is similar to military olive green.
The hood comes with a rigid peak which is handy if stuck in torrential conditions.
This jacket is ready for anything you can throw at it and I got it from Amazon for £32!!
I usually wear a medium but went for the large based on price and while roomy the fit is perfect for walking, plenty of shoulder room.
All in all I am very pleased with this jacket.
