About the Author

Joanne Dewberry started her first business Charlie Moo's just before the birth of her second child Megan in 2008. Disheartened by the party bags that Charlie had received at parties she decided she could do better and so Charlie Moo's was born. Not a natural crafter nor had she sewn before, Joanne soon discovered how therapeutic sewing could be. Along the way she has learnt many new business skills which she is passionate about sharing with small business owners and in particular mums. With 3 children under 5 years herself Joanne understands the constraints on mums in business. Her passion and dedication earned her the title of Dorset Business Mum of the Year 2010 along with numerous other business accolades in the past 3 years. Joanne is passionate about small business and writes a blog www.joannedewberry.co.uk providing small businesses training, advice & networking in areas of social media, marketing and juggling children and a business.

I bought this book after reading a review on a friends facebook page and I'll be honest, I've bought business books before and I was expecting another boring long winded business book but no, it's not, it's written in plain english and by someone who has been there and done that.

Lots of useful informative advice, on branding using social media to help sell your products and especially the pricing chapter, yes maybe the minimum wage isn't a good example but it's better than paying yourself nothing and just covering the cost of fabrics.

A bit disappointed with some advice from someone selling at crafts fairs, "At craft fairs I tend to sell samples, seconds and end of line products"

Having done my first craft fair recently, maybe that explains why I hardly sold anything if people are expecting car boot prices for one of a kind handmade items!

Lots of snippets of advice from others as well and the book is not too expensive either, well worth the money.

Would I recommend that people buy this book, yes I would!

I have run a small craft business for a couple of years and was looking or more marketing ideas and general hints and tips. This book is very slim which was concerning and then I realised it just touches the surface of most area with no real value or depth. It also looks like just a word document with some poor quality scanned b/w images included. Nigh on useless I am afraid and I will be seeking a refund. I am astounded by the positive reviews as I cannot see how anyone can find this book really helpful.I would allege the author's circle of friends has rallied around to give the reviews a boost. You will waste money buying this - trust me.

Don't buy if you need some real help, this information is wildly available on the web.

As a keen hobby-crafter I was interested to read what Joanne Dewberry had to say about setting up a successful craft business. She's put together a great read, telling the story of her own successful business Charlie Moo's, threaded (no pun intended) with stories from other ladies - and one man! - who also run their own businesses. I really liked the mini-projects too at the chapter ends.
Joanne does encourage craft business owners to charge what their products are worth which is great, but personally I wouldn't use the minimum wage as the figure for how much to pay yourself - that wouldn't feed a cat!
That's the only reason for 4 stars not 5 for this book, which was a great read and absorbed my attention even on a boiling hot, packed-to-the-rafters train. Thank you Joanne!

An excellent book written concisely, enthusiastically and effectively. This book is an excellent partner for anyone wishing to progress a hobby into a business or someone wishing to start from scratch. Joanne quite clearly understands what it is like to juggle a family, start a business and maintain an existing business and offers clear advice at every stage. With projects to try out too, this book represents fun, value for money, and tried and tested knowledge which if followed, will provide a solid framework for any new business or enhance an existing small business. By using real life case studies, quotes and social media tips ensures this book is relevant to the crafter and small business owner today. Brilliant read, beautifully written...

A wonderfully simple (exactly what all makers need, simplicity) informative book that every Maker, Crafter and crafts person should read and own. A perfect reference. Keep it close and beside you to remind you of how to make your own crafts into a successful business whenever you have doubts or need to recap on the essential bits.
Well done Joanne.

I have read a significant number of similar small business books and to date this is the best. However, the book is packed with promotions for other companies and filled out with irrelevant craft activities. There is also quite a bit about how to start a twitter account etc which isn't really needed as it is all on the web. Almost feels as if this is all used to fill out the book. Therefore the book, which is expensive, really is little more than a magazine article. Less than 50% of this book addresses the title! I, like another reviewer, would also be a little dubious about some of these reviews....... Having read the book it makes you think they were written by those who were mentioned in its pages.

100% sure that most of the reviews are fabricated! Recommendation to the author, you should mask the fabricated reviews better, since most of 5 star reviews are only reviewed once on your book. I don't buy it. Poorly written book, what can I say? Basically it is a guideline on how to use the internet and Facebook. Sorry author! Should try better with some proper advice.

I received this book yesterday and had it read by the evening. I couldn't put it down. Lots of information from large sections (pricing and how to get it right), how to go about getting CE Mark for your products if required; to little snippets (sorting your pics into sensible albums on Facebook).

It will sit by my computer from now and until I work my way through all the little turned down corners marking what I need to do next!

Oh and some great little projects to do as a bonus! I'm off to make a dribble bib now!
