From the Editor

From the Cradle struck such a deep and distressing chord with me, a mother of two young children, that the night I read it I had to go and camp outside their bedroom to make sure they were safe and sound.

The story starts with a punch and never lets up. It is nerve-racking, completely plausible and will keep you guessing until the very end. And it is this combination of pacing and tension that kept me turning the pages into the early morning.

Louise Voss and Mark Edwards are adept at bringing to life a myriad of characters, some of whom are desperate, others utterly lost or downright mad. None of them will leave you indifferent—the parents of the missing children will wrench your heart, the abductor will chill your blood, and ‘Mad’ Martha and her pram full of dolls, perhaps my favourite, will make you feel uneasy as you keep wondering what she’s capable of.

In the midst of this is DI Patrick Lennon—a single dad who’s trying to juggle the demands of home as best he can while under intense pressure to solve the case. Lennon is humble, real, tough but sensitive, and smart and tenacious.

From the Cradle is an exhilarating, chilling and truly memorable read—one that might just keep you awake at night too.

About the Author

Louise Voss and Mark Edwards are the co-authors of Killing Cupid, Catch Your Death, All Fall Down and Forward Slash. They have also written eight solo novels between them, details of which can be found on their website www.vossandedwards.com. Dubbed 'internet publishing sensations' after being the first UK self-published authors to reach the #1 and #2 spots simultaneously on Amazon.co.uk back in 2011, they have had a wildly varied and interesting publishing career.

Mark lives in Wolverhampton with his wife and young family, while Louise lives in Surrey with her daughter. They love talking to readers on Twitter, @mredwards and @louisevoss1, and run a very lively Facebook page at facebook.com/vossandedwards, where they chat, run competitions and offer prizes. Many of their character names have been suggested by competition winners—most notably, a dog called Rihanna...

I bought this book back in January and because of my ever growing list of books to be read it had slipped down the list. I was recently approved on Netgalley to read The Blissfully Dead, which is the second book in this series, so I decided to read From the Cradle first so that I had an understanding of the characters in these books. I have read all of the books written solely by Mark Edwards but this is the first one I have read that is written jointly by Mark Edwards and Louise Voss, even though I have bought others by them which I am still to read. All I can say is, why have I not read this before now?? What an absolutely brilliant book this is, I was sucked into the story from page one, it had so many twists and turns throughout the book that just as I thought I had discovered who was responsible, I would turn the page and discover I was totally wrong and this happened on more than one occasion. The story was intense throughout and the characters were authentic and, being a parent myself, I really felt for the parents of the abducted children. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that has not yet read it and look forward to starting the next one. I will also be pushing the other Edwards & Voss books I have further up my to read pile. Very worthy 5 stars.

It was an interesting read. Found it a bit haphazard at times as though ideas were being thrown in left, right and centre. By the end I found it all a bit far fetched. Would've liked more time spent on fewer characters to really get to grips with their backgrounds and motivations. Generally; a readable plot and good ideas for characters.....although not necessarily all in the same book.

I enjoyed this well written book. I liked the characters and the story itself. From about the middle of it I thought it seemed as though it was ending but no, something else unexpected would happen. There seemed to be shocks and surprises round every corner.

The editing / proof reading mistakes, all too present in many e-books were minimal, not really enough to note down, a pleasant change. I would recommend this book and I'd like to award it four and a half stars as I rarely award 5*.

Bloody brilliant

What an outstanding book, the story grips you immediately. The characters are great and as for D.I. Patrick Lennon what an awesome character he turned out to be. The In-depth history given to you from the very beginning allows you understand this formidable person - you just can't help but admire and like him.

I thought I knew at one stage who was responsible and where the story was leading me!!! Oh I was so wrong - it's a very clever story that truly keeps you guessing.

Well I'm just about to start Book Two and I can't wait. Louise Voss and Mark Edwards make a winning combination, well done to you both.

I've got HIGH EXPECTATIONS for book two and I have no doubt it'll be just as good (if not better).

This is the first book I have read by these authors, and was very impressed! I normally go for gory psychological thrillers, but thoroughly enjoyed this book - as a matter of fact, I would say it's one of the the best books I've read recently. I totally agree with other comments, and also found it impossible to put down! I ended up staying in bed until late morning to finish it, after reading half the night before! The story keeps you gripped from start to finish with several shocks and unexpected turns which totally took me by surprise!! I would definitely recommend this book, and think it would make an excellent film.

This is the first book I have read by Mark Edwards but I have read and loved everything by Louise Voss (if you're reading this Louise, Lifesaver is one of my all time favourite books are I loved the reference to Spesh the tiger and 'naps' in this one!) From The Cradle introduces us to DI Patrick Lennon who is investigating the disappearance of three young children. The characters are all very believable and the story is absolutely gripping with so many twists and turns it will keep you guessing right to the end. Definitely one of the best books I have read this year - although if, like me, you are animal lover then brace yourself for page 94 and page 398.

I really like the main character detective Lennon and I always find these books by Loiuse and Mark to be exciting. This one does not disappoint. Roll on the next in the series!

Cracking book. I'll not spoil the plot or delve into the characters, preferring to let others discover these things for themselves. Read this in two sittings when I really should've been doing other things like burning off calories in the gym. I'm generally pretty mean buying stuff on Kindle, keeping to offers, free stuff and 99p bargains, but I somehow accidentally purchased this at full price so was pretty grumpy and thinking 'this had better be darned good'. It was. So good, in fact, that I don't regret paying the full amount.
