Reading this book was like listening to a kindly elderly neighbour recounting her family history over the course of several hours while wondering how to escape without seeming impolite. I think I was about 60% through the book before I reached the point described by the synopsis which had enticed me to read the book in the first place; everything that came before that point seemed tedious, slow and repetitive and everything after it appeared feeble, disappointing and infeasible. I don't like writing negative reviews but I feel rather duped into buying it. Many times while reading it (which took several weeks as the poor quality deterred me) I considered abandoning it completely, but nobody likes to offend kindly elderly neighbours. Next time I'll try and choose something with an actual story, written by an actual writer.

Oh my word, what an emotional and heart wrenching story!! I read this book in one sitting, I just could not stop reading. Based on a true story, the mind boggles how some people can be so mean and nasty... That's all I will say because I don't want to spoil it for others, but believe me when I tell you to have tissues nearby because I cried buckets! Would make an excellent film.

I was privileged to be gifted this book Cracks In the Side
walk by the author. I haven't read any of Bette Lee Crosby's books before, why? is what I need to ask myself! This author has been firmly planted upon my favourite authors list.

What can I say about Cracks In the Side
walk. Well, it was my type of reading material. I could get into this story within the first chapter, and for me, this is a good sign that an author can draw me in, its means to me that I know I am going to stay glued with this book.

I didn't realize the storyline was based upon a real true story. This brought this poignant story home to me even more. I really felt for all of the people in it, all except Jeffrey. How can you stay married to a rogue, unfeeling, selfish SOAB, I couldn't have.

Of course I felt for the Mother of the children so badly, I walk in her footsteps, felt every inch of her pain.

As for the Grandparents, I've seen my Mother go through life not having access to one of her grandchildren and the pain, heartbreak and anguish this has caused. So not only did they loose one precious gift, they were on the verge of loosing them too.

At the end of this book I had to keep drying my eyes, and in the mist of my tears I finished the last page.

Bette Lee Crosby, you got me! I was in floods of tears at the end and found it hard to choose the next book. Whatever am I going to read next that is going to match this.

I enjoyed reading this book but found that the middle of the story tailed off a bit with the story of why the father of the children would not let his wife have access to his children being repeated over and over again, when this occurred I found myself skipping pages as I was bored with hearing the same thing over and over again, it did pick up again and the end was a bit emotional but predictable.

Oh, but you WILL need that box of tissues...

Even though I've never had children, I have known the trauma of a very broken family. Three grandchildren finally, after many years, get to meet their Grandmother and the years unfold for each one as Grandma gets them to go through all the cards and other things that were saved for them while they were growing up. Their mother, who had become very sick, finally died. The father moved away with the children, and Charlie, the Grandfather, tried to keep tabs on where they were. He had to keep most of the information close to his heart to protect his wife, but Claire gets her cherished wish granted just before the end of the book. Bette Lee Crosby, you must keep writing. This is so heart-warming. I loved reading it, and can't wait to read more of your stories. xxx
