In an austere and remote all-girls boarding school, the most elite clique of girls are the illustrious members of the schools’ diving team. Their glamorous teacher Miss G (Eva Green) is the willing object of their adolescent fantasies, fuelling the girl’s obsession with illicit night time excursions and fantastic scandalous stories. As Team Captain, Di (Juno Temple) is closest of all the girls to Miss G but her position is challenged when a beautiful Spanish girl, Fiamma, arrives at the school, immediately attracting the attentions of Miss with her beauty and maturity. Consumed with jealousy, Di encourages the group to bully their team mate, and Fiamma becomes isolated and vulnerable to the attentions of her teacher. With passion and jealousy running dangerously high, the girls plan a midnight feast, and the night unfolds with dramatic and disastrous consequences.

The girls are besotted with teacher, Miss G, an eccentric and dark individual whose tall tales have the girl's captivated. She has her admirer within the group and ally's relatively well until a fiery newcomer upsets the balance of the relationships. The drama comes from the devastating effects as Miss G starts to unravel. This is a film which excels in strong and well drawn female characters. There are bits of Miss Jean Brodie and even Lord of the Flies. It's well acted and superbly directed. I'm surprised it hasn't received wider acclaim. Enjoyed it.
I personally find Eva Green very enthralling and enigmatic, which has very likely indeed increased my star rating of this film (i.e. in contrast to if another actress that I might personally tend to find less so did it). So, if your reception towards Eva Green tends to be different....
The `sad ending' (or nearly ending) that has been mentioned in other reviews I guess is one that had to be quite so much so given it's description of `drama' and `thriller'. Though, in itself not (for me personally) `enjoyable'. And probably needed to make a credible change between what was in the beginning and what was in the end, given the time and the power the main character seemed to have (whether this is at all likely or accurate representation for the time I don't know) over this group of children. Though, the fact that other teachers tended to said group of children at different points would perhaps seem to contradict that desired affect slightly, and taint it a little with confusion. But I assume that is from teachers having different night watches or something. But, that is rather digressing...
