Another engrossing read from Dr Drew Pinsky.

He writes about his experiences working as a Medic at the Pasadena Unit from which he works.

Dr Drew writes with a humour and sensitivity and compassion which encourages the reader not just to feel compassion for the individuals attending rehab but he also writes as a medical professional committed to his patients.

Dr Drew writes anout his own dilemmas; of his frustration when insurance companies will not continue to finance an individuals recovery; about losing a patient and his own pain and questioning of his own practise, could he have done more?

He writes with great compassion and insight. For those of us who have watched Celebrity Rehab it was everything I could have hoped for. A very quick, easy and engrossing read.

I am a huge fan of Dr Drew and loveline so I read this book to learn more about addiction behaviour.

It was written well and you could tell the author poured his heart out and really shared his experiences with the reader. I would have liked if the book was longer as I found it so fascinating.

Loved this book. I had watched several series of "Celebrity Rehab" with Dr Drew on TV and was interested to read his book. It is candid and informative about addiction, as well as being very accessible and well written. He comes across as modest and insightful about himself and others.

5.0 out of 5 stars He explains drug and alcohol addiction and it's painful withdrawals in a very compassionate and yet pragmatic way 13 Dec. 2014
By Julie Fitzpatrick - Published on Amazon.com

I have always respected Dr. Pinsky, however, he shows a very vulnerable and realistic side of what it is to be a practicing physician who I believe honestly cares about all people. He explains drug and alcohol addiction and it's painful withdrawals in a very compassionate and yet pragmatic way. This book is informative, educational and a book I would say should be required reading for most high school students. The point of his book is he does not know how to cure addiction but he knows the key to healing from addiction is human connections. We all need safe, appropriate love connections. and open communication. Be kind. Dr. Kindly please write a sequel! And thank you for a great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerfully helpful 21 Jan. 2015

Wow. I have not been able to put this down since I bought it. Profound insight after insight kept exploding in my head. Thank you Dr. Drew for your bravery in writing this book. You gave me permission to be myself by being so honest about yourself.

If you are someone who even in some small way may think you might have an issue with a substance, this book has scientific answers that will explain why you feel/ think that way. You can tell his whole purpose in life is to authentically help people- especially the ones who have suffered traumatic experiences and are trying to numb the pain and emptiness. You will read about a level of compassion you may never have experienced before.

Dr. Drew, again, thank you for being a part of my journey in this crazy thing called life.

Ps. I rarely write reviews, but felt this book was so important that I had to.
4.0 out of 5 stars Professional Recovery at risk 19 May 2015
By Cathleen M. Walker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I liked this book, it's well written and the author is well versed in the subject and insightful. The only mistake he makes is the mistake most "professionals" in the field make when they think they don't need any help. Anyone living with or working with alcoholics and addicts is affected by the disease no matter how educated they think they are. That's why Al-Anon came to be. Without the support of others aware of the ramifications of the disease on caretakers, the disease quickly takes hold of the workplace and professionalism goes out the window. Colleagues lose perspective and boundaries, become overworked and overwhelmed, angry and resentful, and still think they can "handle it" and don't realize the importance of the steps (and the Traditions!) in their own lives. It's a disaster waiting to happen without some kind of resource available for people working in the field to address this issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addiction is a hard topic to understand, this makes it easier. 31 Jan. 2013
By Jeff - Published on Amazon.com

I've been a fan of Dr Drew since the early Loveline days, and though he's moved towards the celebrity type stuff that I'm not personally interested in, I don't find him any less interesting as a mouthpiece for a horrible illness.

What this book is great for is laying a foundation for understanding addiction, be it in relation to those in your life, or just as a topic of interest. People too often fall into traps of trying to interpret addiction through morality, or trying to spout nonsense about "pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps," or "willpower" or other misinterpretations of what is happening biologically and psychologically. This can help you avoid those missteps which can tack years onto the length of your disease or someone else's. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the topic, but especially to those who are just starting the process of trying to get help, for themselves or a loved one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Addiction learning material 10 July 2016
By Kara - Published on Amazon.com

I think it was great to understand that the victims have little control on their feelings & actions at this time in their lives. Things happen early on and they get lost as humans but it's important they seek help and trust in themselves! Dr. Pinsky did great ans highly recommend this book.
