At time of this review it's still possible to pick up this record at a not quite astronomical price. I was erring on the side of caution, not an obssessive - reluctant to pick this up as it the track listing is too similar to David Live not surprising given the short time span between performances with only a couple of different tracks here.- Namely a pre studio version of Its Gonna Be Me from Young Americans and John I'm Only Dancing (Again). Purely on this basis only worthy the price of admission for completists.

However this is a quality release and the audio and artwork markedly different. The photography represents a more glamorous Bowie, less of the frankly, less flattering images of Bowie evidently in the grip of substance abuses on David Live. More importantly the remastering (by Tony Visconti) feels truer than on David Live. Not necessarily better. Whereas that album has added overdubs and sound wise often feels uneven with louder backing vocals and brass it is also one of the best Bowie live albums benefitting from a raw and abrasive feel so not that Cracked Actor particularly needs to "correct" anything. Cracked Actor feels a little more produced but results reliably in by the trusted hand of Visconti, a more even sound. Its arguably more satisfying for it.

Quality of presentation is of a high standard with rigid and glossy packaging. A welcome addition to the numerous live Bowie albums

Note: this is a review of the album not the price, availability etc!

David Bowie's 1974 tour is fascinating for all sorts of reasons. In 1973 he retired Ziggy Stardust, broke up the band, and then recorded Diamond Dogs, released in April 1974. Then he goes off to the USA to tour Diamond Dogs, with a band including Earl Slick (Guitar), Herbie Flowers (Bass), David Sanborn (Alto Sax) and Mike Garson (Piano). Michael Kamen played electric piano, Tony Newman drums, Richard Grando Baritone Sax, and Pablo Rossario percussion. The set was extravagant, based on the "Hunger City" concept of Diamond Dogs. Bowie performed Space Oddity on a boom swung out over the audience.

The July concerts in Philadelphia were recorded and released on the album David Live. I love that album, but it is a long way from Ziggy and the Spiders. Bowie was moving towards a more soulful sound, slowing the pace and introducing suitable backing vocals. At the same time, Slick's electric guitar retains a hard rock sound. Mike Garson's piano is wonderful throughout.

Cracked Actor is recorded just two months later, but Bowie is moving on. In the six weeks between the David Live concerts and the second leg of the tour in September, he records the full-on Soul album Young Americans. Then he starts touring again; and Cracked Actor is taken from a concert at the start of that tour, 5th September in Los Angeles.

The band is similar but not quite the same as for David Live. Carlos Alomar comes in alongside Slick on Guitar. Tony Newman has gone. Doug Rauch replaces Herbie Flowers on Bass and Greg Errico takes over from Tony Newman on Drums.

Official at last, the concert which was unofficially released as 'A Portrait in Flesh' is excellent quality. I miss the longer intro and the chattiness of Bowie with the audience, but can't fault the quality of the album here.
I do love David Live and Cracked Actor is very interesting to compare. Bowie is in fine voice here and I like that this shows the catalyst between the Diamond Dogs and Soul/ Philly Dogs legs of the show.

I bought this album so when I get record deck after mine broke, I will pay this album which was lucky to get from local independent record Store in Stirling at great price. You maybe lucky to buy it from a RSD outlet, so start visiting them at a place near you! The majority think it is a great live recording which is five sides long.

I think that Doctor Dr X is having a bit of a laugh in reviewing this one.
This is a classic album and a must for any true Bowie fan.

The album is excellent and the reviews are for the product. A few idiots selling their copies at ridiculous prices don't justify all these one star reviews.

Since Bowie died his name has become permanantly linked to the term rip off. It was getting bad in the latter years when he was still alive but nothing like now. As a life long fan of 45 years I feel embarrassed that the name of my hero is being constantly used as a means to fleece his fans. As for the whole misquided concept of Record Store Day and the money grabbing speculators, don't get me started!

This latest Cracked Actor 2017 RSD vinyl release IS a 5 star album for the reasons others have stated only if it's bought for a sensible price via a general release. What is isn't worth is the prices the thieves via the likes of some Amazon independent traders, and eBay traders are charging for the limited vinyl RSD versions.,Parlophone have now wisely made this a proper worldwide release on CD and download at sensible prices, which can only be good news for David Bowie fans both old and new.

Paying the OTT prices of the speculators undermines the whole spirit of RSD and fuels the greed and injustice, it also condemns those who play their game to the life of a complete idiot.
