Luscious melodies and seminal grooves. I challenge any soulful warrior not to smile, whoop and freak-e-deeky to these sounds.
From the first bars of the magical "Welcome to the Club" (Blue Magic) to the spine-tingling majestic voice of Clyde Brown - ""You Call me Back" this is a truly great selection of some of Philly's" dopest grooves.
Creme De La Creme offers a superb introduction into the Philly Sound.
Any of you chaps or chapess' not sure were to go next in your quest for groove enlightement I would recomend the following,
- ) Candi Staton - Candi Staton "The Fame Years"
- ) The O'Jays - Backstabbers
- ) Darrell Banks - The Lost Soul
- ) Anything by Blaze
- ) The Salsoul Orchestra
Peace, love and Unity

The Philly sound is one of the most important chapters in the story of 1970's soul music. The rich and creamy sound developed at Sigma studios is beautifully craftd and while some of the urgency was sacrificed, the resulting multi-layered productions are a testament to some of the greatest writers, producers, arrangers and engineers ever brought together under one roof. This collection, however, is just too much of a good thing - it really is a struggle to get all the way through - like eating a whole cake in one sitting. One for dipping into I'd suggest.

By Andy Edwards VINE VOICE on 20 Oct. 2006
This set brings together a couple of acknowledged classics and more than a few lesser known tracks, from the Philly Soul genre. So it's no surprise that you'll hear loads of mid tempo, string laden smooth sounds.

The opening track is therefore, untypical, since it's driven by a conga and the stings are hardly noticeable, but it's soon on to the familiar groove, with little to break it out - and that's the problem here, it's just too much of the same for listening in one go.

That said, there are some sublime tracks here, both the opening and closing tracks would be enough to make me buy the album if I didn't have them in my collection, and Bettye Swann is an under-rated songstress, while Major Harris' well known "Love Won't Let Me Wait" is a seduction classic

So, primarily one for the afficionados, with some classics that every Soul collection should have.
