I have long been a fan of fantasy fiction but recently I have struggled to find something new that really captivates me. I thought I would give Covenant a try as it was clear that it was taking an unusual approach to the genre. I'm very glad I did. This is an intelligent fantasy that weaves mythical elements from a variety of sources. I love the way the different influences combine to produce a coherent philosophy and that it all results in an engaging story filled with interesting characters.
If you're looking for a refreshing change from the traditional fantasy stories that dominate the genre, Covenant will fit the bill perfectly. I know I am looking forward to the sequel with relish.

Am posting my review on the draft version that I was privileged to read. I am so excited that the book is finally here that i just had to come on a give it a rating. It's a damn fine read, the characters believable and evoke emotions that only happen when a character is well written. The story line intriguing and entertaining. Need is say more? Covenant is at the very least a gripping story whose characters and landscapes soon weave their way into your imagination as you join this quest. However, for those with a knowledge of the Western Mystery tradition and particularly the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, it soon becomes clear that the author has a substantial knowledge and understanding of this tradition and the true nature of magic. So not by chance that there are 22 chapters, each one an inner pathworking on the Tree, which can have a profound effect on the reader. Definitely a multi layered novel. I look forward to the sequel which I'm sure will be worth waiting for.

The quality of Derek Thompson's writing is astonishing. Beautiful prose and excellent world-building combine to create a work of fiction that is serious, intelligent, and profound. The book is clearly aimed at a specific audience, one that will appreciate the way esoteric material is woven into the fabric of the story. Such an audience will be happy with a narrative that is slower in pace than modern readers have come to expect. This slow pacing is the only reason why I have given it four stars rather than five.

I will express an interest in that I read an initial draft of this novel quite a few years ago.
I was amazed at the finished product the story had been reworked and polished. The novel works on a number of levels. The interweaving of the arcane and the future, the tensions between the secular and the religious, the urban and rural to name but a few. No doubt it will become popular and raise much discussion among the book clubs as the novel invites curiosity and thought.

This is a big book to get through, so it took me a while, but I'm so glad I did. It's a fantasy with a difference. The characters feel real and you become to care about them quickly in the story. It's an intelligent read that leaves readers thinking and wondering. It's obvious from reading The Covenant that the author knows a lot about philosophy and magic and this shows throughout the whole book. A read that will stay with me for a long time. Well done Mr Thompson!
