Product description

Review

She wrote exciting plots, she was highly skilled at arousing suspense, and she was, too, a writer of fearless originality (Guardian)

No other popular writer has so triumphantly defied classification . . . She satisfied all the questionable criteria of popular fiction, and yet satisfied the exacting requirements of "real literature", something very few novelists ever do (Margaret Forster)

From the first page . . . the reader is back in the moody, brooding atmosphere of Rebecca (New York Times Book Review)

Du Maurier is a storyteller whose sole aim is to bewitch and beguile. And in My Cousin Rachel she does both, with Rebecca looking fondly over her shoulder (New York Times)

In the same category as REBECCA, but an even more consummate piece of storytelling (GUARDIAN 'From the first page . . . the reader is back in the moody, brooding atmosphere of Rebecca’)

NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

If I could give this zero stars I would. Very deceptive. This is a very poorly abridged version of a classic and beautifully written novel.
It is simply wrong to advertise this as the original; Indeed I would hate to think that this may be an introduction to Daphne du Maurier for a new generation.
Shame on you Amazon Kindle. You are now, sadly, the curators of our literary heritage. Do not present this guff as literature. It is only effective as a spoiler for the real novel. (It also contravenes the 'Sale of Goods Act')

I wish I had read these reviews before buying. I thoroughly enjoyed Rebecca, Frenchman's Creek and Jamaica Inn so was looking forward to reading My Cousin Rachel, only to be severely disappointed with this edition. I was confused at first - I thought what on earth happened to Daphne Du Maurier when she was writing this one - did she just forget how to write?! She did not, of course, this is just an exceedingly poor abridged version, and quite frankly an insult to her. I'm off to buy the real version now.

Having just rediscovered Du Maurier, I think this is her best novel yet (for me). It has all the usual ingredients; suspense, a creepily sinister atmosphere, romance, and above all, excitement. I read this book well into the night, and had to ration my reading so as not to finish it too quickly. The big questions - who or what is Rachel? And what is she really after? - keep the reader guessing right up to the end, and while the ending is ... well, unlike some other (good) reviews, I won't hint at what happens. Just read it. You won't be disappointed.

Charles Dickens written by Enid Blyton. Was desperate to get this book prior to leading a group about it so didn't check and see that it was the abridged version. On the plus side I am now familiar with the plot but have not been subject to such puerile simplistic writing since I was at primary school. An insult to most reader's intelligence. Mercifully short.

I loved this book - Du Maurier is a genius at exploring the undercurrents of money, family, gender and class. She can be both subsersive and twisty in her characterization causing both shock and familiarity. Saw the Rachel Weisz film which was good bu nothing touches the panache of the book. Like Patricia Highsmith, this lady defies adaptation - brilliant!

I have read Rebecca and Jamaica Inn and thoroughly enjoyed both. I have just finished reading My Cousin Rachel and enjoyed it even more than the others. Great story, beautifully written and a real page turner.

I really could not put this down. It is very 'racy' in that you are never sidelined in the plot with red herrings but the excitement and curiosity is there to the end ...and even then not really resolved! It is reckoned to be her best novel and time has not diminished this accolade.

Abridged, without any indication that it is. Finished it in one sitting and was astonished at the quick pace and unfinished feel to the story. Then realised that I hadn't purchased the novel proper.
