Product description

Product Description

Floyd Cramer was Nashville's most prolific pianist both as a performer and a session musician whose slip-note playing style came to typify the pop-orientated Nashville sound of the '50s and early '60s. This 2CD set focuses on four of his albums: "Hello Blues", "Last Date", "On the Rebound" and "America's Biggest Selling Pianist" which were released between 1960 and 1961 and includes the UK No. 1 hit, "Last Date". Considered by his peers to be one of the greatest piano players, Floyd Cramer sadly died in 1997. He left behind him a legacy of literally thousands of songs to which he lent his brilliant piano playing. Get hold of a copy of this fantastic CD while stocks last!

As this is a compilation of four albums, it is easier to review each album at a time :-

1) HELLO BLUES - When I heard this I felt that I was listening to an orchestral album, with an occasional featured pianist. This did not reveal Floyd at his best with the exception of one track, "Have I Stayed away Too Long". For this I gave 2/5

2) LAST DATE - More like the Floyd Cramer we learn to expect. "Last Date", "Moments To Remember", "Tennessee Waltz" and "Flip Flop And Bop" 4/5

3) ON THE REBOUND - This IS the Floyd Cramer we expect to hear. "On The Rebound", "Wonderland By Night", "Faded Love", "Let It Be Me", "Corinna, Corinna", "Tammy" and "San Antonio Rose", all standout tracks. 5/5

4) AMERICAS BIGGEST SELLING PIANIST - More of the same. Mr Slip-note has finally arrived. "You Win Again", "Hang On", "Are You Sincere" and the beautiful "The Tide And The Sea", all feature. 5/5

Overall we can see the development of one of the greatest piano sounds of our age (I rate Russ Conway and Winifred Atwell in that same bracket). 17 years later, along with Lloyd Green and the Jordanaires he played on a Nashville album with Vera Lynn!!

There are not that many Nashville session musicians who can be recognised after just a few notes, but Floyd Cramer pioneered a slip note style of piano playing that was instantly recognisable. This style relied on his ability to hit one key and then slide his finger to the next. Its very distinctive, a bluesy style, heard to perfection on one of his biggest hits, Last Date.
Floyd Cramer was first and foremost a session pianist; virtually RCAs house pianist, and where he worked closely with Chet Atkins.
During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Chet Atkins was working on a countrypolitan sound which removed the rough edges of authentic Country music, substituting a smoother rounded sound, often with strings and choruses. Key to the sound was the replacement of steel guitars and fiddles, and Floyd Cramers slip note sound was a ready made replacement for the steel guitar. He played on hundreds of recordings, and with every RCA recording artist. He even played on Heartbreak Hotel with Elvis Presley.
Making his own recordings wasn't Floyds priority, but Chet Atkins encouraged him to do so, and the good folks from Jasmine have packaged the first four of his solo albums he made for RCA. Starting with Hello Blues from 1960, we get an interesting album of Floyd Cramers take on some Blues standards. Not earthy, not gritty, but light interpretations on an easy listening basis. Last Date from 1961, was packaged around his self penned Country and Pop hit that spawned answer songs and all sorts. Last Date stands, like it or not, and I rather do, as a rites of passage tune, evoking that lost world of the early 1960s.
On The Rebound was a follow up album in 1961 that contained Floyd Cramers second big hit, On The Rebound.

It's funny, I would always have proclaimed myself to have been a fan of Floyd Cramer's vast back-catalogue of music... until I took possession of (and then, somewhat laboriously, ploughed my way through) this double disc collection of his earliest work.

I mean, a fan of Floyd Cramer's music would be able to listen to each and every one of these 48 tracks with equal enthusiasm, right?

They wouldn't feel obliged to perpetually skip the first twelve tracks on the first of these discs, which amounts to the whole of the 'Hello Blues' album, on the grounds that the music offers absolutely nothing spectacular whatsoever, now would they?

They wouldn't regularly find themselves joining proceedings at 'Last Date', listening to that for a few bars, and then fast forwarding to the last four tracks from the 'Last Date' album in search of something a little more up-tempo and 'different', surely?

They wouldn't be sitting here now perusing this product's sleeve notes, desperately wrestling with the personal dilemma of whether or not Mr Cramer's natty sweater vest is entitled to one whole Amazon star, all of its own, just to drag the overall score up to something more befitting a veritable giant of the ivories, don't you think?

I would hate to use the term 'nondescript' when talking about a piano-playing legend but, well, I'm afraid that is the word that most readily comes to mind when I think about the early portion of this particular Floydian offering. Unfortunately, it does seem that my appreciation of Floyd Cramer's music begins and ends with the sort of numbers that will get my toes tapping: the sort of numbers that are, generally speaking, somewhat under-represented amongst these 48 tunes.

I have been a fan of Floyd's for many years and when I saw this album I just had to buy it. Not only was a great pianist but an innovater on the keyboard. This CD is a sit and listen to or to play in the background. Whatever your taste in music particularly piano music this a must for everyones collection.

i have loved Floyd's playing style since our first date in 1960 and then discovered that he is ever country album that used a pianist. Nothing better than Floyd, Chet and Boots.
