Beautifully illustrated by the author, this book (diary) is timeless. The talent and care for nature this young woman had is inspiring. It is simply the way of the time, when a pen and a brush with a palate of watercolour paints portray the beauty of the countryside. Edith Holden was so young and so caring for the surrounding country and I feel so sad that her life was cut short so soon through an accidental drowning.

Every January I open the book to start a new year, and find it not at all boring to read her words and see the world through her eyes, as she travels through each month and season.

Anyone who enjoys a walk through the woods, or down a country lane will love this book, as do I (and everyone I know who owns a copy).

Edith Holden (1871 - 1920) was an English illustrator, who wrote and illustrated 'Nature's Notes for 1906', a journal that recorded the wildlife in the countryside around her home of Gowan Bank, Kineton Green Road, Olton, Warwickshire. In June 1977 Holden's great niece, Rowena Stott, enabled the publishers Webb & Bower (in association with Michael Joseph) to publish the journal as "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady". The book is a facsimile of the original journal.

Holden divided the journal by the twelve months of the year, recording the weather and wildlife around her. The illustrations are beautiful watercolours of plants, birds, mammals and butterflies, punctuated by the equally beautiful poetry of Byron, Browning, Wordsworth and Tennyson. Holden's non-cursive handwriting is easy to read.

Although this book sparked an extraordinary, nostalgic boom in everything rural and Edwardian, Holden was a suburban socialist, rather than the genteel lady you expect her to be. If you want to read about Holden's life, Ina Taylor has written the standard biography.

A very favourite of mine, this most delightful Diary is a wonderful source of wild life and flowers. I keep it open month by month, day by day, and enjoy comparing the seasons, months and days of 1906 with the current year. It is also one of my favourite reference books and have identified many flowers and plants by looking it up after being out in the countryside.

The book I purchsed is ok and in good condition, I am quite pleased with it. However a message to other buyers' Edith Holden the author of this book wrote it as her personnal diary. She had her Life story written in another and seperate book entitled "The Edwardian lady" the two books get confused with each other a fact I found out twice, when trying to buy.
