The main problem here is that the author clearly worships Stauffenberg. For example, when Stauffenberg blatantly lies to his fellow conspirators that he saw "Hitler''s body being carried on a stretch", the author says that this was a forgivable exaggeration, and not what it really was: a straight lie to his own friends.
Also, he is REALLY opinionated, calling the Nazis all the the time "the coward so and so...", "the treacherous so and so...", "the fat so and so with his increasing belly..." and on and on. It gets boring after a time.
Anyway, there are some dense parts, with difficult reading or strange phrase constructions. But my general opinion is that one gets a lot of information about this sad subject, for the bucks you've spent in this book.
Jones' covers in fine detail the horrors of living in Nazi Germany and the terrors of its all-consuming state. It is a harrowing look at Nazism, from everything it encompassed to the fate that awaited those who tried to stand up against it. It is an exploration of German pride, resistance, courage and conviction of belief.
' Countdown to Valkyrie' is written in a clear and concise manner, to the point yet utterly engaging. I cannot recommend it enough.
The author marries the need for facts with the need to tell the story well. The book naturally puts Staffenberg at the centre of the book, but so too it deals with the co-conspirators well and hightlights the optimism and folly of the plan. Would say that even though we know how things turned out the set-piece of the assassination attempt and the attempted coup afterwards are written extremely well.
One small criticism would be that, after reading a few other things online about Staffanberg, the author tends to treat him with too much sympathy. As much as they might be considered heroes, many of the officers involved were also self-serving Nazis. Yet can recommend Countdown to Valkyrie. It's both a thriller and history book in one.
From reading the first page to reading the last, you will find its poorly written.
Im not joking when i say its the worst book ive ever read that contains so many grammatical errors.
Every page you turn you will find an error.I dont know if the paper or hardback is the same, but
i would recommend that you stay away from the kindle version, even though the book is informative to
read the amount of spelling mistakes and basic grammar errors makes this book hard to enjoy.
If your looking to read this book, try the paperback or hardback version
as they might not contain the errors in which this kindle edition does.
rise and early successe's set down so that one can more easily understand why he was so popular at first.
The weakness of Britain and France in letting him get away with his agression, eventually ended in a terrible war.
Once Hitler was established he then siezed further power and it became almost impossible to remove him.An abject
lesson on what an absolute ruler can do.
The realisation that only drastic measures can save the day and something must be done before Germany is destroyed make up the rest of the story.
The book describes several earlier plots as well as Valkyrie and I found it Absorbing and at times mind boggling
to think that such things could happen in the modern age.
