Review

This book is fabulous... the absolute best I have ever read on the trauma associated with sex abuse. Written in clear language, it takes the understanding of the problem and the path to recovery to a new level, revealing the devastating nature of traumatic effects of abuse, but also providing a source of concrete hope through a realistic and attainable treatment and recovery program. The section on understanding complex trauma is a major gem in itself, and should be required reading for anyone involved in sex abuse at any level. --Thomas Doyle, J.C.D., C.A.D.C, a Canon lawyer and outspoken advocate for clergy-abuse victims, USA

This book has a great deal to offer to all counsellors and psychotherapists, as well as other practitioners who work with people who have experienced trauma within the context of close relationships. The great strength of this book is that it considers all aspects of this area of therapy in an informed, accessible, caring and comprehensive manner. It represents an exceptional contribution to the literature and will become essential reading for both trainees and experienced practitioners. A welcome example of how knowledge and skills from a range of medical, social and psychotherapeutic approaches can be integrated into a coherent model of practice. --John McLeod, Emeritus Professor of Counselling, University of Abertay, UK; Professor of Psychology, University of Oslo, Norway

This book is truly brilliant. Christiane has a deeply insightful understanding of the severity of abuse. She offers sensitive, professional and highly effective tools for counsellors to work with, and grow from. I recommend this book to every counsellor wanting to gain a deeper understanding of trauma.
And if you have survived abuse then i highly recommend reading her other book, the warrior within; i give it to all of my clients and work through it together with them. Psycho-education for survivors of abuse = empowerment.
Thanks Christiane for the time you have invested into your research and spent pondering this very real and very devastating reality, so that survivors can learn how to thrive, and counsellors can feel confident in the support they offer along this very sacred journey.

This is a great book, one you will be able to refer to and dip into when needed. It is written in a simple way and easily understood. Each chapter is dedicated to a particular subject with top tips and excercises to use with survivors. I would recommend this book for anyone working with survivors, but also to counselling students who will be able to learn more about relationship patterns, trauma and the neurobiology surrounding the responses displayed and how best to manage them.
I have read the authors previous books but feel that this one is a much awaited book in which you can increase your knowledge, your clients knowledge on bodily responses and use of skills beneficial in the therapeutic relationship.

There is much to praise in this excellent book by Christiane Sanderson. It is not just authoritative, it is blessedly accessible and, as is always the case with work from this immensely experienced therapist and consultant, it is a pleasure to read. The uniquely valuable feature of Counselling Skills is its coverage of the challenges posed by the symptoms of complex trauma, including the role of dissociation and problems posed by attachment and relational difficulties. It is essential reading for those working with survivors of any kind of abuse, including childhood sexual abuse, but its message should be broadcast more widely. Teachers, lawyers, doctors and probation officers should read this book, as should everyone to whom survivors might turn for informed support. Christiane also provides compassionate down-to-earth advice on practitioner self-care. Altogether it will be an invaluable guide to those involved in this demanding field.

Bought this amazing book written by a leader in the field and found it invaluable. Half text book and half self help guide for survivors of CSA/trauma to be used in conjunction with therapy. The section on Dissociation is particularly helpful. Highly recommended!

This is another hugely informative and incredibly useful book on the subject of trauma by Christiane Sanderson. It is invaluable for those working within the field (in my case as a sexual abuse counsellor) - but I can see how it would also be really helpful to my clients and all survivors of trauma.
The book has a particularly good progression/'flow' to it; following the survivor's journey from trauma to post-traumatic growth and everything they are likely to encounter along the way.
Christiane's familiar use of 'icons' in her books offers a really good shorthand when you are reading her work/working through specific issues with clients as you are immediately drawn to the relevance of certain sections ('Warning!', 'Top Tip', 'Remember', 'Exercise', 'Remind Your Client').
As she says in the introduction, she has designed it as a book "you can dip in and out of, as you need to; it is a flexible resource to be used in the way it most suits you". This is EXACTLY how I use this book and I recommend it wholeheartedly to you.

this book is set out so well, so that it can be dipped into when needed. As a counsellor it was so informative and simple to read, containing lots of information about complex trauma and its symptoms and exercises to carry out with clients as they work through this

I would however put a warning here that it can trigger issues related to complex trauma from the past and if so you need to find a counsellor rather than try to use this as a self help book
