"4 stars! Memories, regrets and second chances are front and center in Gilroy's fantastic debut. The first book in the Firefly Lake series is complex and mired in secrets. The Vermont setting adds a genuine feel to the story, and the co-stars are highly entertaining. The homebody hero and world-traveling heroine must travel a long and bumpy road to happiness."--RT Book Reviews

Words were her business. Why was it sometimes so hard to find the right ones?
Uncle Trevor said you were all over her like a bad case of poison ivy.
You ever think you’re telling other people’s stories because you can’t face your own?
The Cottage at Firefly Lake was a fairly realistic and thoughtful story with real-life issues and small town family concerns familiar to many. The characters were relatable and not always likable and sometimes frustrating, just like most people I know. The storyline see-saws between hopefulness and angst and was packed to the brim with old and new secrets, lies, missed opportunities, distrust, greed, cowardice, regrets, small-town thinking, betrayals, clouded family histories, a second-chance romance, young love, and meddlesome family members. I was quickly enveloped in Ms. Gilroy’s narrative and was soon emotionally invested in the characters. I remained curious and eager for each tidbit I learned about their back-story as it was slowly revealed layer by layer to the very end. I kept flip-flopping in my opinion about the motives and intentions of several characters; Ms. Gilroy is a cagey one and I would bet she would be an ace poker player. I am even more impressed when I realized this was her debut novel. I was hopeful for a positive result while holding my breath throughout for Sean as, by their history, Charlotte and her family had proven themselves to be untrustworthy. I am looking forward to a return visit with book two, Summer On Firefly Lake.
The biggest draw for me in this novel were the characters. From Charlotte, a war correspondent who has been injured and is wounded in more ways than one, to Sean, who has committed himself totally to his family’s business, and is jaded after a failed marriage. Sean is a hero in the best way: dependable, strong, and stands by his values. (He’s also a loving father to Ty, the teenaged son whose summer romance has echoes of Charlotte and Sean’s past together.) The book is full of tender moments which show how Sean understands Charlotte better than anyone – sometimes even herself. And the smalltown community is realistically depicted, with a whole cast of endearing characters who value family and community and illustrate the riches of a close-knit community where everybody knows everyone and has each other’s backs.
I was sorry to finish the book, but can’t wait to read the story of Charlotte’s sister, Mia, in the follow-up book, Summer at Firefly Lake.
As well as this central relationship, there are other characters and relationships to be explored. This enriched the book and was an aspect of it I particularly enjoyed. Other characters have an important part to play, not just in the present day action, but also for what they did in the past, as events from years ago are revealed and the choices and behaviour of different individuals comes to light. When you read the book, keep an eye on Mia - she is the main character in the sequel.
The other feature of The Cottage at Firefly Lake that I want to mention is the sense of place that Jen Gilroy creates - not only in her descriptions of the local area, but also in the sense of community. Firefly Lake and its surrounding area is more than an attractive place - it is a place which its inhabitants love and treasure, in many cases having lived there for several generations. This feeling of community, continuity and pride informs the entire story and is central to the relationship between Charlie and Sean, as they and their families come face to face with painful decisions regarding the future of the cottage and its land.
This is an enthralling read, which I am happy to recommend. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

"The Cottage at Firefly Lake" by Jen Gilroy is such an enjoyable, and delightful read! The timeline of the story is in the present with references to the past only when it relates to the characters or events. The Genres for this novel are Fiction, Women's Fiction, and Romance. The author describes the cottages, the town , the people and the lake, and I feel like taking a drive just to vacation and relax by the water.
Jen Gilroy's descriptions of her characters remind me of people that could live next door, or in my community. Some of the characters are complex and complicated, but they feel so real. Characters that make mistakes, have secrets, and work hard to get to their goals in life. In the blurb to the story it states," Some mistakes can never be fixed and some secrets never forgiven.....but some loves can never be forgotten."
Charlotte Gibbs and her sister Mia and her nieces come back to Firefly Lake to sell the cottage and land that has been in their family for years. Charlotte is a successful journalist, that has provided stories from around the world, many in war zones. The Gibbs family has owned the cottage for many years, and every summer would come out to enjoy living in the cottage and the lake.
Sean Carmichael and his twin brother build boats, and have a family marina. Sean is divorced, and hopes his teenage son will one day take over the business.
Charlotte and Sean had been very close for many years, and Charlotte left breaking things off suddenly with Sean. and without an explanation.
If the Gibbs sell the cottage and land, it could create a big problem for Sean and the rest of the community. Not only that, has Sean ever gotten over Charlie??
I love the way the author describes family, friends, loyalty, love, and hope.
I highly recommend this novel to those readers who enjoy reading Women's fiction, and Romantic Novels. I can't wait to read Jen Gilroy's next book! Happy Reading!!!
