As soon as I placed the order, I was reading loads of mixed reviews on these Corsair VS series power supplies. Some reviews were positive saying they were extremely good bang for your buck, and others were quite negative saying things like they were unreliable. I'm aware that Corsair have had two different "styles" of the VS line, the older ones (which had a sticker with "VS" written in orange), and this current model with the more minimalistic styling. Most of the reviews I could find were for the older model, so I was contemplating cancelling this order and opting for another brand/model.
Overall, the unit is pretty much silent at all times and she has had no issues. It powers her build absolutely fine and her specs are as follows (if you want to compare if it could handle what you're using):
Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 7
CPU: Intel Core i5 4690k
RAM: 16GB HyperX DDR3 2400MHz
GPU: MSI Gaming X GTX 1070
SSD: Corsair Force 3 240GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB
She plays pretty light games (The Sims 4, Animal Crossing emulated etc.) - but she never has any issues with unexpected freezes/crashes/shutdowns, so overall it's holding up perfectly fine! I know that they always say not to skimp on power supplies, which is why I opted to go for this one rather than another brand at a lower cost. This unit had the exact cables that were required for my girlfriends build (including 6 pin and a 6+2 pin PCI power cables to power her GTX 1070).
The fan on this unit reaches 30dB once under a full 550w load (which if you were using that much, you would probably get a higher wattage unit) - and at 350w usage, you're looking at the fan running under 20dB in volume. Another couple of nice features is that it is 80 Plus certified, and it also comes with a 3 year warranty.
Hopefully this has been useful, and to finish off, I'll list each of the connectors found on the unit as a simple list so that you hopefully have all of the information you would need :)
Connectors:
x1 - ATX cable (24-pin) - 550mm ± 10mm
x1 - EPS/ATX12v cable (8 pin [4+4]) - 600mm ± 10mm
x2 - PCIe connectors (8 pin [6+2]) - 670mm ± 10mm
x7 - SATA connectors
x2 - Peripheral connectors (Molex)
x1 - Floppy connector
The good bits - every connection pin is customizable from smallest connection to largest - your CPU plug can be four or eight pins, GPU six or eight, for example. It is also generous with power plugs for drives.
The wires come wrapped in a sort of mesh, which is rigid and flexible so you can sort of pose the wires as required, and don't need cable tidies as desperately, which is a very nice touch. The wires are also generously long, I could probably power a hard drive in the next machine over with these things. Plenty of wire to work around air flow and hardware requirements.
The only real downside comes from this mesh and the sheer amount of cables - in a corsair case, this isn't too bad as there's empty space intended for all these big chunky unused cables. In a more standard, cheaper case like my backup machine, this would be a real problem, there's nowhere for those wires to go without sitting around and blocking airflow, some of them don't even fit in the dead space because the mesh and bulk of them makes them so inflexible.
Still, as far as PSUs go that's a pretty minor and soecific gripe, if you're savvy with your cable-fu you'll not have a problem, and the high quality and general generosity of the wires and plugs outweigh this by a huge margin for me.
The main thing I look in PSU is stability and noise levels. And this PSU is really quite which I’m quite pleased about.
This PSU is not modular so there will be a lot of cables lying around which you would need to find space inside your case to tuck away.
There’s plenty of interfaces available and connectors and cables are well made. The only downside is that it is slightly bulky. If you have not much space in your case I would recommend going for modular or semi-modular PSU.
