I decided to stick with Corsair and go for their Pro Platinum Series, HX750i 750W power supply. And I’m very happy with it.
It came well presented with the power supply packed in a velvet bag and well protected in it’s snug fitted foam packaging. You also get a nice back for all the cables… this is handy for storing the cables that you don’t use. And you get plenty of tie straps, screws, a cable grip, and the instructions.
Installation is simple, it’s an ATX PSU. But I will say that plugging in some of those cables is tough; so it might be better to plug in the cables you need before securing the power supply in your machine.
I’m not going to go into detail about wattage and amps, it’s not necessary. This will easily power my set up and will easily run a second 980 G1 Gaming in the future and it’s most efficient between a 40-50% load @ 93%. And being as it’s a Corsairs HXi series PSU, you get Japanese capacitors rated for 105’C, zero RPM fan mode technology, and Corsair’s Link Digital support where you can monitor its performance and control fan speed in the desktop. The software will actually give statistical information from other sensors in your system, including case fan speeds and CPU & GPU temperatures.
You get all the usual connectors here with the Link Digital link added. This connects to a spare USB header on your motherboard. And for those that are a little paranoid there is a button to test the fan is functional, although Corsair do clearly state the zero RPM fan speed technology.
The software is useful giving you 5 tabs that show you information in different ways. I feel it could be made much simpler though. The tab that I like is the Power tab. This shows you how efficient the power supply is, gives you voltage & amp readings for the three major rails, fan speed, and temperature. The information here will surprise a lot of people that think they need more watts than necessary.
If you need a robust, reliable, and modular PSU that you can rely on, then the HXi series supplies from Corsair are hard to beat. It’s efficient, quality components ensure long life and server grade reliability, silent, and comes with some neat software that will keep the nerds happy.

My previous one was a Corsair CX750 which is neither modular nor up to anything strenuous (Tier 4 of 5), also only "80 plus bronze", and given how often I have it switched on, it was time for an upgrade.
After seeking a really power efficient and MODULAR PSU (the cable management was finally getting to me), I found an EVGA 850W T2 (Titanium) for ~£190 on ebay (Titanium being the maximum efficiency rating at the time of writing, even over Platinum), but it had horrible coil whine even when idle. First time i've ever had that :( I'm currently in the process of sending this back, and it's a shame because it was very sleek, much like this Corsair model.
but my point is - with this PSU, I get the power efficiency I wanted (platinum and titanium are pretty much the same efficiency which is of course load-dependent) at £60 cheaper, AND I don't have to put up with that annoying chirping because Corsair are actually capable of glueing their parts together properly! ;)
Pros:
+ Fully modular with testing port
+ I experienced no coil whine, YMMV
+ "80 plus Platinum" efficiency rating (~92% at optimal load)
+ Good price over other platinum models
+ The wires are more flexible than an EVGA model for bending around the case
+ Tier one PSU - comes with all the benefits therein (for example: Haswell certified, meaning they can cope with the C6 and C7 sleep states of 0.05Amps without triggering the under-current protection switch)
Cons?
- Unlike EVGA, the fan doesn't have an 'eco' switch option, the fan is set to automatically spin when needed (under high load)
- Accompanying paperwork e.t.c in box doesn't look as flashy as EVGA's, but it's the unit that counts.
Thank you, Corsair!
Good:
Very quiet, silent even as there's no fan movement at anything that I've used it for yet.
As mentioned, smoother power delivery and sufficient supply for the system; water cooled CPU, 5 fans in total, 4 drives (NVME M2, SSD, 2 * hdd's), external sound card, etc..
Sufficient power for a new RTX 2080 ti or something similar (currently GTX 980ti).
Not so good:
Has 'high quality' cables which have capacitors built in (type 4) which were replacing the older cables (type 3). These new cables are very hard to bend in places as the capacitors make them stiffer. The capacitors are a good thing except that it's difficult to get the cables to fit just how you want them to. The 8 pin power cable to the motherboard was particularly difficult to fit. In the end I unplugged it from the psu and fitted it to the motherboard then threaded it back to the psu.
If I was buying another I might go for the HX850i or similar so that I could use the Corsair link software for monitoring and tweaking though I understand the HX850i comes with the older type 3 cables so might want to upgrade these. The prices of both HX850 and HX850i are similar (about £10 more for the HX850i).
Very happy, easy enough to fit, silent running and would buy this or similar again.
