This is far more power than most systems will ever need, but anyone looking at a dual graphics card setup, especially an Nvidia SLI one, will want to be sure they have enough headroom to handle high load levels.
Anyone looking at a 'normal' desktop build, or a single GPU gaming machine should probably look for something in the 500w-600w region and save themselves some money.
The modular design is great, it's quiet, and it's understated unlike some of the competition. There probably isn't a brand in the PSU market with a better reputation than Corsair and this PSU should outlive almost all of the other components in a system and the 850w should provide adequate future-proofing for many years.
My spec for reference (I doubt I'm using much more than 600w of the 850):
Intel i5 2500K @4.4Ghz
Gigabyte P67A-UD4 Motherboard
8GB DDR3 RAM @1600Mhz
2x HD6950 in crossfire
2x 1TB SATA HDDs
4x case fans with LCD fan controller.
This PSU has been made with LUXURY in mind.
You receive a nice big box which opens horizontally and reveals the neatly organised content. You can only see the foam and a nice Velcro closing accessory bag, in which your modular cables will be.
Now when you pull the foam (which is sturdy black foam to suit the colour of the bags) away you are pleasantly greeted with a second nice soft large bag (closable with a pull-rope) containing the PSU itself, with the bare minimum amount of wires hanging off of it. (24 PIN ATX, 2x 6(+2)PIN PCI-E, 8PIN ATX)
Now let me tell you one little flaw. I am using a NZXT Phantom, a full tower Behemoth which has cable management grommets. The 24PIN ATX is JUST the right length, but I had some trouble stretching the PCI-E cables to reach my HD6950 from the bottom grommet, they are now quite tight, I will have to see if this is avoidable somehow, but it makes cable management a bit of a pain. Same with the 8 PIN. I had to have this hanging over my mobo, which does not improve airflow. I would have taken this as a point off, but the luxury of the packaging has redeemed this point.
I do not have any benchmarks yet. This is my first custom build, so I am just waiting for my processor to arrive now (probably tomorrow, a AMD FX8150 if you want to know)to see how quiet this baby performs.
What I can say, first impressions tell me that this baby is SWEET.
Also props to Amazon, delivering a day earlier than the expected date.
all in all;
-great looks (a little longer than a typical PSU)
-luxury packaging and extra's
-some cables may be too short for your case, I had to pull a bit to get things to reach.
with a less effective PSU your computer will suffer with irregularities in power which can cause freezing and in many occasions total failure that can fry your computer, now to the point.
Corsair have made a diamond here with its 850w PSU, modular makes it very easy to cable manage and the airflow has been improved dramatically, very easy to install and you will see a very well made product, the cables are very strong and bendy which also helps, they give you more cables than you will need and there length suited my needs with a Midi tower fine. now the only problem i have, is the size of the PSU unit, its the same width as your standard unit but it is nearly 2 inches longer, owning a Midi tower has its losses in this area as the 120mm fan duct is partly covered by the PSU overlap.
All in all, worth the cost, easy to install, comes with more cables than what you will need, and has a 7 year warranty!
Corsair always make good products.
