Product Description

Product Description

Ray Liotta stars as Manny, a recently widowed man with a bubbly daughter in Los Angeles in the late 1950s. To help with the domestic side of his life, he employs vivacious housekeeper Corrina (Whoopi Goldberg), and soon finds himself drawn into a relationship with her. This brings about the wholesale disapproval of his racist neighbours, friends and family.

From Amazon.co.uk

In Corrina, Corrina Ray Liotta plays a 1950s jingle composer whose wife dies, leaving him to raise their grieving young daughter (Tina Majorino) alone. Dad hires an African-American housekeeper (Whoopi Goldberg), who helps fill the gap in the child's life--and then Dad's life. Soon an interracial relationship crossing the social mores of the era is underway. Written and directed by Jessie Nelson (The Story of Us), the film is a spot-on recreation of 1950s suburbia without gratuitous kitsch. Liotta is perfect as a working man of the day, given to white shirts and narrow ties; Goldberg gives one of her finest performances as the level-headed Corrina; and little Majorino is heartbreakingly effective. But the film entirely bears the stamp of one person, and that's Nelson, who has a wonderfully witty eye and a sophisticated but sensitive approach to the crosscurrents of emotion at play in this story. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

This is one of the best films you will ever watch. Yes it is a feel good romantic comedy? but what's wrong with that because it is very well done. The young Tina Majorina will just melt your heart. Whoopie is just amzing in this film beautiful, wise. The film is about a widower (Ray Liotta) who hires a housekeeper (Whoopie Goldberg) to keep house and look after his young daughter (Tina Marjorina) who has become increasingly withdrawn since the death of her mother. The film is set in the 1950s or 1960s so there are racial connotations. Its beautifully made and it is a film you will always remember.

The story of a black woman who comes to work and care for a white motherless child and her widowed father. Good performances from Ray Liotta and Whoppee Goldberg - both playing against type. A heartwarming story of love against the odds - this being 50's America where black and white's together were unheard of. Good support from Tina Majorino as the girl in question - grief not an easy role for a youngster to convey. A lovely cameo from Don Ameche - in one of his final performances (he completed his scenes just days before his death). A truly charming film.

I first watched this movie when I was young, and I have rewatched it recently and it still has the same magic it had before.
This is a sweet, slightly sad tale of a young girl who's mother dies. The girl refuses to speak after her mothers death, and it is only when her father hires a nanny to look after her that she begins to come out of her shell. The magic and friendship that grows between the nanny and the little girl makes a heartwarming tale that will be enjoyed by all.
I definitely recommend you watch this, no matter how old you are you will find this film enchanting and entertaining and definitely memorable.

Made in the 1950s a young girl Molly (Tina Marjorino) mother dies and times are hard for her and her father Manny (Ray Liotta) Molly hasnt spoken a word since she went. Mollys father eventually finds the right housekeeper (Whoopi Goldberg) Soon Molly is crazy about Corrina and eventually her father is crazy about her too. A truly heart warming comedy a must for all the family; once seen never forgotten.

I loved this film when I first went to see it at its cinema release and have never tired of watching it. Can't understand why this movie is not better known. Nobody I ever mention it to has heard of it. I did read it received criticism when released for not examining in more detail the racial prejudice a mixed race relationship would have faced at the time - but I'm glad it is meaningful without going too deep. My kids have seen it several times now and love it too. Good family film, great acting especially from the under rated Ray Liota - a truly satisfying watch.

i love this film, already had it on video but i have been waiting to see it on DVD, so was chuffed when i did. It's funny, sweet and very well acted, whoopie Goldberg is a nanny and very good at it she brings out the best in the other cast, well worth watching, It's good to see a film that joins different cultures well, and lets people see that whatever race we are we are all the same.

I purchased this DVD from music magpie, I had never seen this vintage movie of Whoopi Goldberg's before! But being a real big fan of Whoopi I
thought it would be just as good and entertaining as all her other movies! I was right it was a very good movie, really enjoyed it. Ms Goldberg was
at her usual excellent acting best, glad I brought it.

This is the most adorable film focusing on the development of the relationship between Whoopi and Corrina, in particular Whoopi helping the very distressed daughter of Ray to talk again after the death of her mother. Of course the film then progresses onto the relationship between Whoopi and Ray. A very special film.
