Coronation starts with the Clagg family, consisting of mother and father Will and Violet, children Johnny and Gwenny, and Granny Bonner, sitting on a train from Sheffield to London. Will has got five tickets giving his family a wonderful vantage point from which to watch the Coronation in 1953 of Queen Elizabeth II. Everybody is very excited, but the day doesn't quite go to plan.

This ia a short and pleasant story of a family's big trip, after sacrificing their annual holiday to Morecambe for a treat of a lifetime. I enjoyed the characterisations and felt the family's excitement with them, and also the plummeting of their spirits later in the story. Happily, the book ends on a nice note. I think it really sums up the patriotism of the era and reminds us that things weren't always handed to us on a plate.

This short novel opens with five members of the Clagg family on the Coronation Special from Sheffield station to London, with the promise of an exciting day ahead.
It's Coronation Day and Will Clagg has managed to acquire five tickets to watch the royal procession in one of the best places to view it. The expense of this trip means the family will have to forgo their annual holiday, but the thrill and excitement of being in London for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, will be something to remember.
The day doesn't work out quite as expected, but despite all the mishaps and disappointments the day is certainly memorable and each family member feels some satisfaction by the end of the day.
This was a lovely short story with a feel-good ending. I enjoyed it a lot.

a short novel, a typically well observed portrayal of people and places. If you have a soft spot for Mrs 'arris and her companions then I think you will enjoy spending time with the Clagg family and their trip to see the Queen.

3.0 out of 5 stars A family outing to the Coronation and a snapshot of the times 10 Sept. 2006
By K. Maxwell - Published on
Format: Hardcover
It's the 2nd June 1953 and Will Clagg is a proud man who has bought his family prime viewing tickets for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II - forgoing the annual family holiday at the sea in exchange for the expense of the trip to London. However, once they get to London things don't go quite as planned.

This is the story of an ordinary family who go to London for a once-in-a-life-time event, but the event they get is not the one that they anticipate. The writing is simple and easy to read. This is a reasonably short story at 128 pages that is quickly read but leaves you with a good feeling at the end. If you are after a quick read that is not padded out or pretentious and has a realistic feeling for the event it revolves around then this is a good book to pick up.
5.0 out of 5 stars This is a charming book 15 July 2013

Paul Gallico's book, "Coronation" conveys the great excitement that ordinary people felt at the time of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The Clagg family decides to give up their two weeks at the seaside in order to come to London to see the queen crowned. Mr. Clagg believes he has actual seats but when he and his family arrive in London they find that no such seats exist. Mr. Clagg wants to do something special for his family, his wife wants to taste champagne for the first time, his son wants to see all the soldiers in uniform and his daughter wants a glimpse of the queen. Though the family spends the entire Coronation procession behind a tall fence that the local police refuse to open, their Coronation dreams are all realized, not, however in the way they imagined. Highly recommended!
5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful! 5 Nov. 2012

This was my best read since The Misremembered Man. A simple uncluttered story of a family's huge disappointment offset by small truths that are discovered later. I'll say no more lest it spoils except it brings a lump in the throat and moistness to the eyes.
