Some reviewers say they couldn't put this book down. After a few pages, I found it difficult to pick up again.
It was like plodding through a very surreal landscape with no 'feel' of Cornwall whatsoever. The cover and title are very misleading as it implies a cosy Christmas story about family celebrating the season in a traditional cottage in Cornwall.
Instead, what we get are Ivy's ramblings about her dead mother and her grief which seem to go on and on and seem very fragmented, and her Tim-Nice-But-Dim type husband who makes beetroot jam and pack choi jelly. Which, we are told, go down a treat in the village......really!
Then, we have a ghost story which, if Disney produced ghost stories, this would be an ideal plot line. Ivy's mum's ghost hides all her daughters red paint, then they magically appear again. Then mum's ghost communicates with Ivy by writing on a postcard in shining, moonlight filled letters. Oh, and the ghost is apparently able to make baby bootees and paint noses on reindeer.
The cardboard characters are so lifeless that I really couldn't have cared less about them. Even towards the end when Ivy and husband have a near tragedy it was predictable and trite.

I don't think I'll be reading this one again unless I have a bout of insomnia and then I'd have to think twice.
