Having lived on the streets of West Baltimore, Maryland, where this compelling drama takes place, actor-director Charles S. Dutton knows the territory, physically, socially, and emotionally, and his compassionate approach is vital to the series' success. Dutton cares for his characters deeply enough to give them a realistic shred of hope, even when hope is consistently dashed by the ravages of addiction. This is, at its root, a family tragedy, focusing on errant father Gary (T.K. Carter, in a heartbreaking performance) a once-successful investor trapped in a tailspin of heroin dependency. His estranged wife Fran (Khandi Alexander) was the first to get hooked, and she's struggling to get clean, while their 15-year-old son DeAndre (Sean Nelson, from the indie hit Fresh) deals drugs, temporarily avoiding their deadly allure while facing the challenge of premature fatherhood.

Through revealing flashbacks and numerous local characters, we see the explicit fallout of addiction, and while violence occasionally erupts, its constant threat is secondary to Dutton's dramatic vision, which remains steadfastly alert to the humanity and neglected potential of these lost and searching souls. The Corner is,essentially the civilian flipside of HBO's equally laudable series The Wire, which approaches a similar neighbourhood from a police-squad perspective. Performances are uniformly superb, details are uncannily perfect, and for all of its human horror, The Corner is riveting, not depressing. Well worth watching

As a fore runner to the brilliant series 'The Wire', 'The Corner' has plenty going for it. This series is in six parts and is based around a family from Baltimore. The story charts a year in the life of this family and as this is based on a true story it does make for grim viewing at times. It is a fine piece of television.

The acting is pretty much fabulous across the board here and in particular Khandi Alexander as Fran. She is superb and for her to stand out in a cast this good says much for her performance. There are several actor's from 'The Wire' in this series and it seems odd at first to see them in roles completely different to the ones we are more used to. There is a very nice touch at the end when the real character's featured are interviewed and this obviously adds to the realism.

So is it as good as 'The Wire'? In my opinion it isn't quite up to the very high standards that that series has set but it is definitely well worth watching and would make a very worthwhile purchase.

This mini-series is brutal, gritty, depressing and sad, but it is also incredible. This is something that everybody should see as it educates them on the terrible drug dealing in the darker parts of the cities in America. It follows three main characters which are DeAndre the 15 year old teen growing up far to fast on the corners of Baltimore, Fran (DeAndre's mother) the struggling mother and drug fiend and Gary the father that was once successful and now like Fran a drug fiend that lives in his mother's basement.
This isn't for everyone as it is bold and shows them injecting themselves with drugs, shows them slowly decaying as the drugs destroy them which is heart-breaking and also tells you at the end of the last episode what happened to the characters in real life as this is based on a true story (which makes it all the more important and sad) and sadly most are killed by gangs or drugs. But this is gripping and incredible and it was clearly made by people who genuinely cared for the quality, realism and detail of the show.
I have never cried over anything on television I'll admit I wasn't far off at the end of this show. This will tell you more about drugs and what they do than a dozen leaflets and advertisement's. Must have.

Although this lacks the depth of the Wire, both in variety of plots and characters, it is equally gripping. It's about the people of Baltimore who are affected by and dealing in drugs, and much less about the police. There's less explicit violence, but the often grim and miserable lives many of the people live comes through powerfully. There's a sort of mock documentary aspect, and at the end the real people on whom the characters were based are interviewed. Some of the actors reappear in the Wire, often in very different roles. If you're a fan of the Wire, you'll love this as well.

Whilst not as powerful in terms of cinematography and script as The Wire, the fact that this is the true story makes it compelling viewing. A lot of the dialogue may be flat and not as sharp as The Wire...but they are the real words spoken by the real protagonists (as taken from the book). An additional pleasure is reading the end credits of each episode - for many of the true life people in the story play bit part characters: and the last interview of the last episode brings the story brilliantly together.

Don't expect the sheer epicness of The Wire...just watch it for its poignancy and sadness of the truth.

Slow, high impact viewing

Difficult viewing on many levels. This docudrama lack the sharpness of 'The Wire' - and, as in life, the story rambles a bit - and there are times when it looks more like an actors workshop, and they're getting more out of it than the audience. It drags through the Baltimore rivers of misery quite relentlessly, and I did end up with more of sense of the reality of this world and the humanity and difficulties for the people that inhabit it. A must see - especially if you have loved The Wire as we have.
